Tatiana about

Svetlana about

We chose the excursion program “Mysticism and History of Nizhny Novgorod” for our friends, a married couple from Alaska. The difficulty of the choice was that the husband does not understand a word of Russian, and the wife speaks very poorly English. Moreover, we were limited in time. Therefore, when we applied for an excursion, we were prepared for refusal. To our surprise, the guide found the optimal conditions for us in just 15 minutes. Our guests are very happy! I would like to express my deep gratitude to Pavel for an interesting excursion, as well as an individual, non-standard approach to business!

Thanks to Svetlana for the tour! We walked along the entire Rozhdestvenskaya Street and Svetlana told us about almost every house. Everything at home has a history, it is clear that Svetlana herself is very interested in this topic, because she constantly finds new facts in the archives. It is very interesting to read archival information (copies, of course). We enjoyed it, I definitely recommend it!

Arzamas is one of the oldest cities in the Nizhny Novgorod region. According to legend, it was founded by Tsar Ivan the Terrible during his campaign against Kazan in 1552, as a fortress on the site of an ancient Mordovian settlement. The name "Arzamas" comes from the combination of the Mordovian words "erzya", the name of the Mordovian tribe, and "mazy" - red, beautiful. Thus, “Arzamas” can be translated as “Beautiful city of Erzya”. The city is truly located on the beautiful banks of the Teshi River.

Maslenitsa is one of the most beloved and satisfying national holidays. It is associated with the beginning of spring and an abundance of rosy pancakes on the table. Maslenitsa does not have a fixed date and is celebrated 7 weeks before Easter, falling in the second half of February or the first days of March. This fun holiday is celebrated for a whole week, but not all pancake lovers know the history of the origin of Maslenitsa festivities.

What can you see in Nizhny Novgorod in 1 day? If you open the description of the city, you will see huge list attractions. What is more important and interesting? How to get the best route around the city? You can try to do this yourself, or you can entrust this work to specialists. For example, go to bus and walking tour of Nizhny Novgorod! It lasts three hours and is not that expensive - about 500 rubles. I myself have just returned from a similar excursion around the city, so I’m writing a review without delay.

How to buy a ticket for a sightseeing tour of Nizhny Novgorod

This can be done in several ways. For example, come to the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin (transport stop "Minin and Pozharsky Square"), enter the territory through the arch of the main Dmitrievskaya Tower, immediately turn right and end up in the so-called Kremlin Tourist Center. Here you can select the desired date and time. If you're lucky, you can join a group that leaves "literally in 15 minutes."

But that's if you're lucky. In the summer, during the peak tourist season, or on weekends, you can easily hear a less encouraging answer: “all places are occupied today, come back tomorrow.” Of course, there is nothing fatal about not getting on the excursion. This is not the last place in a boat from a sinking ship. But, once you have planned it, it will be a shame to get a turnaround.

I myself used the Ultrakassa service. Just a few clicks of the mouse and a ticket for the desired date and time was already crawling out of the printer. Comfortable. You know that you are guaranteed to get into the group, and on the day and time that is convenient. And you don’t need to go ahead and buy a ticket. I invite you to follow my example. Here is a form with which you can buy a ticket for a sightseeing tour of Nizhny Novgorod.

The day before the start of the excursion, a company employee called me (it turns out that this is a common practice - they call everyone), made sure that I had not changed my mind and told me when and where to arrive. At this point the preparatory part was completed. All that remains is to charge the camera battery, prepare space on the memory card, show up the next day and join the organized crowd of tourists.

Before the excursion

Our route started right next to tourist center of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin:

Do you see where the arrow is pointing and where the lady is looking? You need to arrive there and present your voucher (the one that came out of the printer). They don’t ask for anything else, although when purchasing a ticket I had to enter the series and passport number. Of course, I grabbed it just in case, but it stayed in my bag. Wasn't needed.

There is a wide trade in souvenirs inside the tourist center. If you want to take some trinket with you as a souvenir of Nizhny Novgorod, you can buy refrigerator magnets, mugs, plates, spoons, and nesting dolls here. Even more souvenirs are sold in the arch of the Dmitrievskaya Tower. The main thing is not to be stupid and not to buy something big and heavy before the excursion starts. After all, then you will have to carry this thing with you.

If you really like something, postpone the purchase until the end of the city tour. After all, in the end they will bring you back. To this same place. Then you'll have some fun :)

You can also dress up as a king or queen and take a photo on a homemade throne with a scepter and orb in your hands. The main thing is not to forget to put on a stately expression. IN as a last resort- “pull your eyebrows together,” as the hero of one famous film said. Otherwise, your image will clearly be missing something:

Yeah! Here is one auntie who has already decided to be imprinted for centuries:

Alas, there is no time to follow the process. Our excursion begins.

Beginning of the sightseeing tour of Nizhny. Guide

Here I must make a lyrical digression and admit that in general I don’t really like going with excursion groups. There are many reasons for this. For example, I start to get nervous when I don’t hear the guide speaking. I get even more nervous when it sounds soothing. There are, you know, talkers whose speech sounds monotonous and rote. If you come across such an “art expert” as a guide, write “lost.”

There are also those who cannot walk quickly and the group spends most of the time on slow, silent transitions from one place to another. You understand that there are only a few minutes left to listen and see the sights. Not to mention taking a good photo of them.

I saw enough of such “tour guides” in Peterhof. They waddle and speak barely. A couple of people are still stoically straining their ears in the hope of hearing at least something other than the noise of the fountains. Others have already resigned themselves and simply walk as if on their own.

Going to sightseeing tour of Nizhny Novgorod, I set myself up in advance - not to worry or get upset if something goes wrong. Well, at the very least, I’ll just take a walk, look at the city, take a picture of something.

Probably, everything would have happened if it weren’t for Alice. That was the name of our guide. A nice young girl with correct speech and, as it seemed to me, deep knowledge of the subject, she immediately put me at ease. No antics, buzzwords, jargon. Correct speech, excellent diction, ability to listen and answer questions clearly. In addition to this, she spoke into the microphone, so even if you walked slightly away from the group to take photos, you could continue to listen to the story.

The guide had a folder in her hands, which she periodically looked into, but not to spy on some historical date or name of this or that figure, but to show us illustrations of what, for example, the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin used to look like:

I don’t know if all the guides are prepared in the same way and have a similar manner of speaking, but I can give Alice a solid A for her work. If you find her, consider yourself lucky.

Tour of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin

It would be strange if we started with something else. After all Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin- the main attraction and the oldest city building. This is where our bus and walking tour began. First we moved along the exhibition military equipment, located between the main Dmitrievskaya and Kladovaya towers. This exhibition is under open air open all year round. But, of course, it is better to visit it in the warm season.

The best time to visit is the second half of the day, when the sun begins to set. Then it will cover samples of military equipment that were produced at enterprises in the city of Gorky (as Nizhny Novgorod was called in Soviet times) and the region during the war. By the time the excursion began, the exhibits were in the shadow of the fortress wall, so the photographs did not turn out brilliantly:

I found especially interesting three panels made using the technique FrameUnite Art located in the arches of the Kremlin wall. These are the works of local photographer Igor Pshenitsyn. The triptych is called "Our Victory".

If you look at the panel from a distance, you can see the overall large image:

When you get closer, you can see individual elements of the overall picture. These are nothing more than portraits of front-line soldiers. Some of them are made on a light background, others are darker. Careful selection and relative position of the portraits made it possible to form a general image:

Next we moved to the square between the administrative buildings. On the one hand - the legislative assembly, on the other Arbitration court and a new building with vertical details on the facade, which, alas, completely stands out from the general architecture.

Here is also a monument to the founder of Nizhny Novgorod, Georgy Vsevolodovich, and his spiritual mentor, Saint Simon.

It is noteworthy that St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral- the only one preserved on the territory of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin - is also the only one in Russia with a tent-type dome. Kept in the temple tomb with the ashes of Kozma Minin. I hope you have heard about the Nizhny Novgorod militia and do not need to introduce this folk hero. It’s simply amazing, I’ve walked past this cathedral hundreds of times, and only got around to going in and seeing Minin’s tomb on a guided tour! Before, I didn’t even know she was here! In a word, darkness.

We were given only 5 minutes to visit the cathedral. Not enough, of course. It was easy to get in and out. But when the excursion is over, you can return here.

Observation deck of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin

Very close to the cathedral there is an eternal flame, a memory lane and, of course, an observation deck. While here, you begin to understand what the word “space” means.

Being on the very edge of a multi-meter cliff, you will see the majestic confluence of two large rivers - the Oka and the Volga, the famous Strelka, which is sung in the famous song: “On the wide Volga, on the distant Strelka.”

Now the territory of Strelka is being improved in preparation for the 2018 football championship. Old buildings are being demolished, and in their place a recreational area is being built and a new stadium is being built.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which we will get into today, is a real decoration of the landscape. We spent about 20 minutes here. The guide told us about how previously there were no residential buildings across the river at all, but only rows of the famous Nizhny Novgorod Fair, and even then only in the warm season.

This time the position of the sun was favorable for shooting, so we managed to take a number of successful photographs. Alas, even the best of them still do not convey the atmosphere of this wonderful place. However, I will take the risk of showing them to you so that you can get an impression of the views from the observation deck.

Having admired the views, we returned to the Dmitrievskaya Tower, left the Kremlin territory and went to board the bus.

Other sights of Nizhny Novgorod

Gazelle NEXT acted as a tour bus. It probably wouldn’t be very convenient to take it on a long excursion, but for a three-hour walk around the city it would be fine. Well-tinted windows and air conditioning saved us from the heat that prevailed on the day of the excursion.

First we did a "lap of honor" central square city, looked at the monument to Kozma Minin and the fountain installed in memory of the ancient city water supply. Imagine, before there were no pipes in city houses. Neither with cold, nor, especially with hot water. If you need water, please put on slippers, or rather bast shoes, and drag the buckets to the fountain. How much you bring is all yours. And you still say that your life is somehow bad! I would look at you if I had to walk several blocks to get water.

Next we turned onto Minin Street and looked out of the bus window at the preserved old merchant houses. We saw the buildings of several large universities. Including, we drove past the Nizhny Novgorod State technical university. In one of its courtyards there is a real ekranoplan. The fact is that the university is named after Rostislav Alekseev, the author of the idea of hydrofoils, ekranoplanes and other technical wonders.

On Sennaya Square we turned left and began a picturesque descent along the Kazan Congress. You may know that Nizhny Novgorod is partly located on a mountain, partly down by the river. The height difference reaches 120 meters in places. Therefore, the city has many streets along which you can drive down and, accordingly, drive up. They are called congresses.

Some of them are of natural origin. For example, former ravines. Others are artificially created. It’s even scary to say, but 30,000 people went to work every day to organize one of the congresses - Pokhvalinsky! Mostly they were prisoners and soldiers.

During a sightseeing tour of the city, of course, this will not be possible. Just take note. Moreover, a very beautiful panorama opens up from the top observation deck, which would be a shame not to see. So, when the city tour is over and the bus brings you back to the Kremlin, do not forget to immediately take a walk to the Chkalov Stairs.

And finally, one last interesting piece of information. Every year in the spring there are races up the stairs. Anyone can take part at their own risk. The winner receives a decent prize. Every year it is different, but often the winner was given the keys to a brand new Volga car. So, if you need a Volga, don't miss the chance. Practice.

Being at the bottom of the Chkalov Stairs, we were not able to take normal photographs of it. The reason was the sun, which hit the lens directly. All attempts by group members to take a portrait of themselves against the backdrop of one of the most important Nizhny Novgorod landmarks were invariably a fiasco. Only a forced outbreak could have saved the situation. But not everyone knew about this, and I didn’t bother with my advice.

In addition to the staircase itself, in this part of the embankment you can look at the Hero Boat. This is a real ship, not a dummy. He took part in the defense of Stalingrad. There is also a creation by a Hungarian sculptor. Deer- symbol of the city. From a distance it looks quite normal. But as you get closer, you will notice that the sculpture consists of sharp strips of metal.

This was probably done to prevent selfie-takers from climbing on the deer. And it’s true - I wouldn’t climb. There is even a warning sign next to the sculpture. Do not climb, otherwise you will leave a piece of clothing or lard there. It's up to anyone's luck.

In addition to man-made attractions, here you can admire the vast expanses of the Volga. Unfortunately, very few pleasure boats now sail along the Volga. But I still remember the times when several beautiful white motor ships stood here in the roadstead, and high-speed hydrofoils - rockets, comets - glided across the water surface. Who knows, maybe over time it will all come back.

I suggest you look at a few photographs taken at the Chkalov Stairs:

If you wish, you can see photographs of this place and other sights of Nizhny Novgorod on my website dedicated to photography: (will open in a separate window)

The walk along the embankment took only 10 minutes. It is clear that in such a short time it is impossible to to the fullest enjoy the views, breathe in the fresh river air and take good photos. The purpose of the tour is simply to show you interesting places. Then you can come or come here on your own and stay here as long as you want.

Meanwhile, we load onto the bus and go to see the next attraction in Nizhny.

Nativity (Stroganov) Church

In fact, it is called the Church of the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary. But the money for its construction was given by the Nizhny Novgorod merchant Stroganov, and it is located on Rozhdestvenskaya Street. So they call it either Rozhdestvenskaya or Stroganovskaya.

Parking for cars on Rozhdestvenskaya Street is paid, but trucks and buses are generally prohibited from driving. Therefore, our bus stopped at Nizhne-Volzhskaya embankment almost immediately behind the river station building. In the doorway of the houses we saw a church. Even with a fleeting glance from afar, she seemed very unusual and beautiful to us:

To get to the church, we had to cross the road and go up a small alley. Up close, the structure looks fundamental - not as toy-like as from a distance. Intricate rich stone carvings and beautiful multi-colored domes allow the church to claim the title of the most beautiful temple in Nizhny Novgorod.

The guide said that the place where the church was built abounds in groundwater. It has always been this way. Therefore, to protect the building, an underground network was built to drain groundwater into the river. To this day you can see large metal gratings, under which the roar of the water element can be heard. Not just some streams, but real underground rivers raging in the depths of the mountain. Day after day, year after year, for several centuries now, water has been directed through safe channels to prevent soil erosion.

However, apparently, not everything is going as smoothly as we would like. This is evidenced by significant cracks in stone structures:

It is known that in 1860, due to ground subsidence, the church bell tower began to tilt noticeably. It deviated from the vertical by 1.2 meters and could collapse at any minute. To save the bell tower, it was necessary to change the foundation and part of the upper tiers. There were no modern construction equipment then, so the work was carried out manually with great precautions.

This struggle between good and evil has been going on here for centuries. Who will win? We hope it's still good.

To get to the temple, we had to walk part of the way up a rather steep slope. The cars going uphill here roar with their engines like bison. It’s even scary to imagine how dangerous it becomes here in winter when there is ice.

The group spread out somewhat. Some climbed the climb quite quickly and had the opportunity to get a better look at the stucco on the façade of the church. Others walked with stops, but still reached the cherished line.

The inside of the church turned out to be unexpectedly small. Not surprising. It stretches high up, but occupies a relatively small area. Unfortunately, photography of the interior was prohibited. It's a pity - there is a beautiful carved altar there. They say that in times Soviet power it was covered with a false wall to save it from destruction.

The outside of the church is much easier to photograph from the mountain. You can go up the road or stairs and take pictures like this:

Do you see the clock at the top of the bell tower? Interesting fact. They are completely mechanical and need to be wound every two weeks.

Alas, the entire church, including the bell tower, did not fit into the frame. To get a general view, you will have to shoot from even more high point. For example, from Fedorovsky embankment.

But by moving the camera zoom a little, you can grab individual design elements. They really look very nice:

This completed our acquaintance with the Church of the Nativity. Our next destination is Alexander Nevsky Cathedral on Strelka.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral on Strelka

The guide told us in detail about this grandiose structure. Unfortunately, I managed to remember little. These are just some of the details that remain in my memory.

The height of the cathedral is 87 meters. For comparison. An ordinary Brezhnev 9-story building has a height of 28 meters. Mentally stack three nine-story buildings on top of each other and you will get an idea of how grandiose the cathedral is.

Inside the cathedral, up to 1000 parishioners can be accommodated simultaneously.

454 thousand rubles and kopecks were spent on the initial construction. All these funds were raised through donations over a 10-year period by 1866. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral took 13 years to build and was completely finished by 1881.

It is noteworthy that the temple did not have a permanent parish. Its parishioners were merchants who came to trade at the Nizhny Novgorod fair. The latter, as is known, functioned only in the warm season. In winter, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was closed and not even heated.

In Soviet times, a project was developed to demolish the cathedral and build a lighthouse with a monument to V.I. Lenin in its place. Fortunately, the project was not fully implemented. The only thing they managed to do was dismantle the tent domes. This happened in 1930.

Over time, all kinds of additional buildings were added to the temple, gradually changing it beyond recognition. There were warehouses, various offices and even living quarters. In 1940, there was a fire in the building. As a result, all interior painting was lost.

During the Great Patriotic War An anti-aircraft battery was installed on the main drum of the temple to protect the city from enemy air raids.

Currently, the cathedral is working again. In 2009, it was awarded cathedral status.

On the territory of the cathedral there is a bell - the third largest in Russia. Its diameter and height are the same and equal to 4 meters. Weight - 60 tons. This is approximately the same weight as a railway tank filled with some kind of petroleum product.

The casting of the bell took place at the Baltic plant and lasted several hours. Cooling of the finished bell took 3 weeks.

Being a resident of Nizhny Novgorod, I must admit, I had never been to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral before. Although it is clearly visible from many parts of the city, it is located a little away from the roads. In order to go to the cathedral, it was necessary to specially allocate time for this, but, as is usually the case, there was none at all.

Only on a sightseeing tour of Nizhny did I get the opportunity to look at the cathedral from the inside. What can we say? Even as you approach the temple, you begin to feel like an insignificant insect. The impression is “compounded” by the fact that around the cathedral there was not a single building higher than 3 floors. And now they have been demolished as the territory is being improved for the World Cup.

And when you enter the cathedral... The only place where I experienced the same feeling was St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral in Kronstadt. Greatness is the best word to describe the experience.

It's definitely worth a visit. Of course I will show my photos. I tried my best to convey in them the atmosphere and spirit of the cathedral. But in comparison with reality, they look as pitiful and defective as I myself do in comparison with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

We were given approximately 20 minutes to explore this attraction. It would probably be unnecessary to say that this is very little. Nevertheless, during the allotted time, some members of the group managed, among other things, to visit the toilet and buy some pies at a kiosk on the territory of the cathedral.

The last attraction left in line:

Assumption Church on Fedorovsky embankment

The bus again carried us across the bridge over the Oka, then we climbed up the mountain along the Pokhvalinsky exit, squeezed through a traffic jam on Ilyinskaya Street, full of old two-story houses, and finally arrived at the last point of the route. Here on one “patch” you can see two historical buildings at once. Actually Assumption Church And Afanasy Olesov's house(emphasis on the first syllable).

Afanasy Olesov, as the guide told us, was not a merchant or industrialist. It was a tax collector. In the old days, the tax system was a little different than it is today. It was necessary to collect and hand over to the treasury a certain amount. If you collect more, you can keep the excess for yourself. If it’s less, be kind enough to fill the gap from your own pocket. A sort of UTII from the century before last.

Afanasy Olesov was a more than successful tax collector. No wonder he had enough money to buy land in this most beautiful place and build yourself such luxurious chambers (I wasn’t inside, but even looking from the outside you can get some idea of the interior decoration).

Noticing the successful actions of the official, the tsar sent him to the Astrakhan region, where there was a real problem with the collection of taxes. Realizing that he could pay with his head for his “successful” actions in a new place, Afanasy makes a promise to build a church if he returns back safe and sound.

This is how the Assumption Church appeared in the immediate vicinity of Olesov’s house. Then, already during the Soviet era, a high-rise building appeared next to it, which greatly spoiled the view. The church itself was partially destroyed and restored only in the 90s of the last century.

If you climb onto the balcony of the top floor of a residential building, you can see the Assumption Church, the house of Afanasy Olesov and many other interesting things, including the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin from a completely unexpected angle. I also found in my archive a photo of the Assumption Church during restoration. If interested, .

Then we proceeded to the observation deck of the Fedorovsky embankment. The weather that day was favorable for shooting, so we got some interesting colorful photos:

I would like to comment a little on the last photo. If you look closely, to the right of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral there is a pile of ruins. Port warehouses previously stood on this site. Inside were openwork metal structures, as if even protected by the state as a monument of engineering art.

Alas, just a week before the excursion, the historical warehouses were demolished. Instead of all the buildings on Strelka, they are going to build a huge recreational area. Previously, before the warehouses were demolished, Strelka looked like this: photo. I didn’t even think that these photographs would become historical so quickly.

The last observation deck made a special impression on city guests. Not every city has two large rivers at once, their confluence, or such a difference in altitude. And then the weather was just as ordered. In a word, a combination of successful factors, plus the professionalism of the guide did their job.

Conclusion

In my opinion, the city tour was quite a success. Now it’s clear that three hours is not so little if you plan your route properly. We visited quite a few interesting places, looked at the sights of Nizhny Novgorod. Of course, all this can be seen in pictures, but if you walk the streets yourself, listen to a guide, see historical places with your own eyes, you will be much more impressed.

After such an excursion, you will no longer say the usual phrase: “I haven’t even seen the city itself.” Moreover, now you will know where else you can go and where to spend free time, if one appears.

I hope that I did not bore you too much with my story. You probably already noticed that the text contained many links to my other site, where I publish photographs of the city, old buildings, temples and other interesting things. Thus, I decided to expand the scope of our excursion a little to show photographs of places that were mentioned in the reports and that were not possible to photograph from the bus.

Let me take my leave with this. If you decide to go on a sightseeing tour of Nizhny Novgorod, I wish you a successful trip, good weather and decent fellow travelers :).
