Yes, it turns out that even paper nowadays can be made not only from wood, but also from other common materials.

To produce such a popular material as paper, it is not necessary to use wood. After all, it can even be made from stone. The head of TBM, Nobuyoshi Yamasaki, left school at 15, worked as a carpenter, and then created a company selling used cars. One day, while on vacation in Europe, he was amazed by ancient buildings that had stood for centuries.

“I wanted to end my entrepreneurial career and leave behind a company that would last hundreds of years,” he tells Bloomberg Technology.

In 2008, Nobuyushi learned that Taiwan had invented a technology for making paper from stone, and decided to build a business on it.

TBM's main product is business cards, which are very popular in Japan. However, they are not printed on regular paper, but on Limex, made from limestone. It has a glossy surface, does not absorb water, is very difficult to tear or wrinkle, and can be written on even under water.

According to Nobuyushi Yamasaki, his product will help save nature. Where 20 trees need to be cut down to produce regular paper, his company uses less than a ton of limestone and 200 kg of polyolefin, sources of which are practically inexhaustible.

Also, Limex does not require water to make, whereas a ton of regular paper requires 100 tons of water.

Thus, Yamasaki concludes, in the near future, the popularization of Limex will significantly reduce the intensity of deforestation, and will also “play an important role in those regions where there is a problem of water shortage.”

According to the entrepreneur, the technology will become especially important in 10 years, when the global demand for paper, according to analysts, will double.

The plant opened in February 2015, but the first “stone” paper was produced only last summer. Now TBM has received a contract to produce “unkillable” menus for a chain of sushi restaurants owned by Sushiro Global Holdings.

The entrepreneur plans to open hundreds of factories in regions rich in limestone, such as Morocco and California. Currently, TBM, which has already managed to attract just over $9 million in investments, has 80 employees. IN next year the company plans to earn a billion yen.

Yamasaki's ultimate goal is to grow his enterprise into a company generating 1 trillion yen annually by the mid-2030s. This is still only a small part of the income of the largest Japanese manufacturers of plain paper.

Finally, we note that not all experts share Yamasaki’s enthusiastic words. Thus, according to Yasuhiro Nakada, an analyst at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, the popularization of Limex, on the contrary, will only harm the environment.

“Producing paper from wood chips involves planting trees, so I don’t know how attractive Limex will be from an environmental point of view,” the expert believes.
