It happened on September 16, 2010, when, having returned from summer vacation, I decided to check out my old apartment, in which no one had lived for eight years.
The house in which she was located was built back in the days Soviet Union, like most of the buildings in our city. It was located in such a way that some of its windows looked into the courtyard, and some onto the road passing next to it. Over the past years, the road has already fallen into complete disrepair, so there was practically no traffic on it. Across the road was a small military station that used to house garages for military trucks. Soon after the collapse of the USSR, it closed and was subsequently sold for almost nothing. Now in its place there is a small market and several 24-hour shops.
The yard was a jumble of similar houses, surrounded by perennial trees blocking the path sun rays. Therefore, even on the hottest day there was a breath of coolness in the yard. But that's not the point.
So that day, as usual, I walked towards my house along a small road surrounded by old chestnut trees. It was already about seven in the evening, and the farewell rays of the setting sun were barely breaking through their thick branches. That year, autumn arrived quite early, bringing with it cold and rainy weather.
I, as usual, went up to the fourth floor, and after fumbling a little with the keys, I crossed the threshold of my apartment. The empty room greeted me with cold silence, in which a dense, almost tangible silence reigned, which even the sounds of my own steps could not disturb. There was complete silence in the house; no sounds could be heard even from the neighboring apartments, which was somewhat unusual, given the practical complete absence soundproofing.
Having briefly examined all the premises, I was convinced that the apartment was still in in perfect order, and was about to leave when something strange happened. It is worth explaining here that almost the opposite front door there is a room where there used to be a bedroom, which I converted into my office when I still lived there. The only window in this room did not look out onto the street, but onto the balcony that ran along the living room and my office. The door leading to the balcony could only be opened and closed from the outside; it was impossible to open it from the inside.
In the corridor where I was at that moment, there was a small mirror that reflected part of the office and the balcony. I had already opened the first door and began to open the second when I noticed a vague shadow in the mirror that slipped past the window overlooking the balcony. At that moment, I did not attach any importance to this, mistaking it for the light of car headlights reflected on the walls (which happened there every time a car passed by the house) and continued to open the door.
Then the sound of the balcony door opening reached my ears, which certainly could not have happened, since the door can only be opened from the living room (which I already mentioned), and not from being on the balcony. Moreover, a few minutes before, I checked the lock myself and made sure that it was locked. But strangely enough, even realizing the impossibility of what was happening, I continued to stand still, intensely listening to all the sounds in the living room. Then I heard heavy footsteps, as if someone was walking in the direction from the balcony door towards the corridor. At that very second I turned off the light in the hallway and rushed headlong into landing, slamming the door behind him, and with the usual movement, turned the key in the lock twice. The same footsteps were heard behind the door, and then the door handle lowered and rose twice, as if whoever was on the other side of the door was trying to get out. Then this creature sharply pulled the door handle towards himself, and I again heard his footsteps moving away from the door. Having mentally praised the castle, thanks to which I managed to avoid meeting the occupant of the empty apartment, I immediately locked the second door and left the house in a hurry, fearing that this creature would still manage to find a way out, and our next meeting might not end so well (for me anyway).
Two weeks later, having plucked up courage, I nevertheless returned to that apartment and did not find anything unusual there. Everything was in its place, the balcony door was still locked. In short, there was nothing to indicate that anyone else was there.

Stories like this happen sometimes... real life, my dear reader. Exactly three years have passed since that day. Nothing like this ever happened again in that apartment. And yet I have not been able to find an explanation for what happened to this day. Now I plan to study the history of the house, find out what used to be in its place.
