How to make a pattern for a small dog. Clothing patterns for dogs of different breeds and sizes

Today there are hundreds of breeds in the world, many of which are not at all adapted to the harsh climate. This is especially true for small pets (e.g. Yorkshire Terrier or Chihuahua) and short-haired dogs (Doberman, Dalmatian, etc.). It is not surprising that owners try to protect them from the cold by wearing all kinds of jackets, overalls or vests, often resembling a smaller copy of human clothing. However, buy them in finished form can be very problematic, because stores don’t always have the required sizes, so in such cases, all that remains is to sew clothes for the dog with your own hands, having previously developed a pattern taking into account all its parameters.

What will you need?

Before moving on to the active stage of work, you need to choose the material for the future overalls. In this matter, preference should be given to light fabric, which has a water-repellent effect and a dense edge, which will help save time on processing seams.

Of course, your dog may have several options in his wardrobe. outerwear, but if this is not the case, then you need to try to make the product as universal as possible (for any weather). To do this, in addition to the material for the top layer, you need to prepare a warmer underlay.

Important! If your dog constantly participates in exhibitions, then you know how important it is to properly care for its coat, soit is better to choose a material with a smooth texture (for example, viscose or silk),so that the fabric does not tangle or damage the hairs.

In addition to the fabric, we immediately prepare other components of successful work:
  • zipper (it is most convenient to use the tractor variety, especially since it has high level reliability and wear resistance, so you don't have to worry mechanical damage teeth or other damage);
  • elastic band (give preference to a product that is round in cross-section: it is more convenient to adjust and it stretches less);
  • fastener on the collar (choose at your discretion: Velcro, button or button).

You can also choose additional accessories, which from a design point of view will help make the overalls more interesting.

How to take measurements of a dog?

When you have decided on the fabric and model of the future overalls for your dog, it’s time to move on to taking measurements, since it’s unlikely to be possible without a life-size pattern.

First you need to measure the length of your pet's body, starting from the neck to the very base of the tail. Divide the value obtained in centimeters into 8 parts, as a result of which 1/8 of the total length will be equal to 1 square on the pattern sheet.

It is necessary to draw the entire sheet with such cells (for small and medium-sized dogs, a piece of paper or a piece of wallpaper will be enough), preparing a simple diagram of the future product.
Having completed this task, we move on to measuring the circumference of the neck (denoted as K-D), front (L-I) and hind legs(M-H), the volume of the animal’s hip (F-B), as well as the place where the front paw becomes the scapula (G-D).

Don't forget to measure your waist circumference (A-B) and chest circumference at the deepest point chest(G-V). And finally, we measure the circumference of the tail in order to later make a hole the right size(G-H).

Important! EIf you are not a professional and are sewing overalls for the first time, first make trial version using old material (for example, an unnecessary sheet).

To create a pattern for a regular jumpsuit, these measurements will be quite sufficient - provided that you are more interested in a comfortable fit and not in the presence of pockets in certain places or any other additions that require other measurements.

All measurements obtained should be transferred to paper, connecting the points together. In the upper part, you need to add 30 mm to the measurements for the back of the animal.

Making a pattern with your own hands

It should be noted right away that as a result of cutting the paper pattern, you should end up with several separate parts: a pattern for the back, tummy, chest, sleeves and hood (if you are going to add it to the product).

If you are going to sew a product from only one type of fabric, which is easier, separating the pants from the chest is not required. But if you have two types of fabric, and you want the jumpsuit to consist of two parts, then on the largest paper part (the back) you need to draw a dividing line using a ruler (starting at the bend on the belly side and going up).

Now we lay out the fabric (the grain thread should run horizontally) and place the largest paper back pattern on top, folding it back and securing it with pins.
It is necessary to leave seam allowances on all sides (1 cm on the concave lines, 1.5 cm on the other sides, 2 cm should be left for the hem at the bottom). To do this, step back the specified distance from the paper part and draw lines with a piece of soap. Having cut out one part along the marked lines, we proceed to similar markings of the rest.

Important! You only need to apply allowances, as well as cut fabric, along the line of the former fold, since the rest of the part has already been cut from another material.

If you have it consisting of two colors, then the finished product should be two patterns of each of them (before applying the paper cutting, you need to fold the fabric in half). Now we again take the paper pattern of the back and bend the folded part to make a pattern of a different color from it.
We attach it to the fabric with pins and outline it with soap, leaving the same allowances of 1.5 cm.

As a result, you will have two separate pieces of “paper back”. Now, using the same principle, we cut the breast and sleeve from the fabric. As for the latter, often on the pattern the part that goes to the tummy turns out to be narrower at the bottom than the part that goes to the back, so it is advisable to equalize them.

To do this, first we pin the part going to the back to the fabric folded in half, and then we insert a second paper pattern (going to the stomach) to the corner of the future neckline. After this, the second part, not yet attached to the fabric, needs to be moved to the distance that is missing.

Having placed two sleeve parts side by side on one double fabric, step back 1.5 cm on the sides and 2 cm on the bottom and cut out the part (along the perimeter, without cutting the fabric into two parts, like a paper pattern).
You should also cut out a strip for the lock as a separate element so that the slider does not pull in the dog’s fur. The length of this strip should be equal to the length of the chest minus one centimeter. Again, fold the fabric in half and draw out a rectangle 3-3.5 cm wide. After adding allowances, you can cut out this part as well.

From the lining, all the details are cut out in exactly the same way (you must first fold the fabric in half), only when cutting the sleeves you do not need to leave allowances for the hem, but simply trace the existing pattern, folding it bottom part. We do the same with the pants pattern, leaving no allowances.

Did you know? Dogs can recognize up to 250 words and even count up to 5. Their intelligence is at the level of two-year-old human children.

When cutting out the back, there is no longer any need to separate part of the pants and the chest and we simply trace the part around the entire perimeter, retreating 1.5 cm everywhere, only leaving no room for hems in the lower part. In order for the hood to be fastened, we additionally cut out a strap from the fabric (a rectangle measuring 3x4.5 cm + allowances).

Sewing overalls

When you already have all the components of the future jumpsuit, all that remains is to sew them together. Let's start, perhaps, with the easiest thing and sew our strap onto the hood and the locking bar.

This needs to be done only on two sides: top and bottom, so that later you can turn the part right side out and smooth it out thoroughly. We take out the corners of the inside-out parts with a needle, only carefully so as not to pull out the stitching threads.

We sew the finished and ironed elements around the perimeter again, leaving only the cut side untouched (the fold, top and bottom are processed). We take the parts for the hood and manually connect them, after which we sew everything along the same seams using a machine. The front part can be sealed with several lines, or it can be supplemented with a fur strip.

We cut off all processed indents, leaving only half a centimeter after the stitching. Then we turn the hood inside out and iron all the allowances towards the central part. All that remains is to do the decorative stitching, retreating 1 mm from the edge of the seams (set the machine mode to 4).

In exactly the same way, the inner part of the hood is sewn together (from a different fabric), after which its inner and outer parts are sewn together (we connect it “along the face” and then turn it inside out).

Now it’s time to sew the back and pants (an option when the pattern of overalls for a dog was made taking into account the use of two types of fabric), which is also easy to do with your own hands, following the step-by-step instructions provided.
We place these two parts with the right sides facing each other, stitch them down, retreating 1.5 cm from the edge, cut off the excess parts, iron them and perform a decorative stitch along the front side. When the back of the future garment has become a single whole, we attach insulation to it (from the wrong side) and baste it.

We do the same with the sleeves, and if some part of the insulation has come out, you can always trim it. When the insulation has taken its place on the largest part of the pattern (back + pants), we proceed to sewing the latter: we bring together the side seams of each part (the insulation should be with outside) and grind them down, retreating 1.5 cm from the edge.

Important! When doing machine stitching, try to grab the insulation only along the very edge, and if it comes out more, cut it off with scissors so that it does not thicken the legs.

There should be 2 cm of fabric left at the bottom for hemming, so if the padding polyester gets within this distance, it also needs to be cut off. Ideally, you should press the seam on the legs so that there are no bulges when processing the sides.
Now we sew the sleeve to the back, just do not confuse the line going to the stomach with the line going to the back (the one above). Having sewn one, we do the same with the other, not forgetting to cut off the excess fabric and padding at the allowances.

We iron the allowance towards the sleeve and next to the main seam we make decorative stitching on the sleeve side. Next, we connect the sleeves to part of the breast. The seams need to be sewn, retreating 1.5 cm from the edge. Having completed this task, we turn everything inside out and move on to connecting the sleeve seam with the side seam.

Important! Do not overstitch where the side seam passes.to the edgebreasts 1.5 cm and insert the elastic (simply sew it on the indicatedfrom the edgedistance along with the side seam).

Processing the sleeve seam (we step back 2 cm from the edge) is done by stitching the corner diagonally (not along the perimeter, but slightly at an angle). When folding the sleeve, this will help the adjacent seams fit together more accurately.

Having sewed all the parts to each other, you need to reduce the allowance along the entire perimeter of the product to 1-1.5 cm. You can also process the seams with a zigzag. For greater convenience, we make several notches in the place where the sleeve is sewn to the part of the body (this will make the sleeve softer and there will be no folds on the front side).
Having turned everything inside out, we iron the seams again and sew on decorative elements: emblems, buttons, buttons, etc. It is important to do this before the lining is sewn.

Let's move on to connecting the lining parts. We sew the pants in the same way, and then connect part of the back with part of the sleeve and tummy. If you have chosen a smooth material for the lining, then we additionally process the seams using an overlocker.

Fold the side seams (sleeve seam and side seam). On one side we sew the stitching without adding 1.5 cm to the end (as was done with the main fabric), and on the other we stitch only the edges, leaving a hole for turning the overalls inside out.

Now we take the hood and turn it inside out with the side that should later be in the middle. We sew the front parts of both parts together at a distance of 5 cm from the edge, thus aligning the edge of the overalls with the edge of the front part of the hood.
Then we take the lining and, turning it right side out, sew it to the inside front of the hood. Similar actions are also performed on the other side (5 cm from the edge).

After the corners of the overalls are connected to the lining, take the latter and connect it to the inside of the overalls - right sides facing each other. As a result, the inner part of the overalls must be sewn to the lining, and its outer part must be sewn to the product itself.

Sew the strap to the hood, leaving 1 cm from the edge and leaving 1 mm at the bottom.

Time to move on to the zipper. If necessary, it must be shortened so that 1.5 cm remains at the bottom and top (seam allowances). Open the zipper and sew it to the parts of the breast (teeth facing out) so that there is about 2 cm left to the edge. A restrictive strip is sewn on top of one part of the zipper, which is used to prevent wool from getting into the slider (the connection is made in the same seam as the zipper was sewn on, but does not reach its edge).

The entire structure is covered with a lining and stitched again using the same seam. Be sure to trim the seam allowance and fold it toward the breast. The top edge of the zipper also needs to be folded and only then stitched all the way to the end.

Similar actions are performed on the other side: lifting the lining, the zipper is laid with its teeth outward (the slider on its front side should look down).

On this side, the zipper at the top is sewn on top of the already attached tab on the hood. Now we cover the lining and sew it along the same seam. Once the zipper is secured, take the edges of the elastic (so it can taper) and pin it to the zipper seam (it should extend 1.5cm from the edge to allow the seam to contract).
We do the same on the other side.

Having secured the elastic on both sides so that it can later be stretched and sewn, we make a stitch along the zipper, moving to the hood, at the same time sewing its upper part and moving to the second part with the lock.

To complete the task, it is better to use a special zipper foot.

If you have sewn everything properly (you can verify this by slightly turning the overalls), trim off the parts of the fabric protruding above the seams, leaving only 0.5 cm, and make notches in the places where the hood bends.

Now we will sew on the hood. To do this, turn it inside out and tuck it inside between the lining and the main part of the product. We turn out the corners on both sides and connect the two parts of the hood, sweeping them together. In this case, you need to make sure that all its seams match.
Next, we look for places to sew the lining to the main part and, stepping back 5 cm from the edge (exactly at these marks), we begin to sew the hood to the fabric. Be sure to make sure that it lies evenly and there are no unsightly irregularities (all layers should be pulled together). Also, before stitching the seam, be sure to mark the center of the hood.

Finally, we manually sew the lining to the already basted parts (hood and main part), and after machine stitching we trim all protruding parts closer to the seam line, leaving about 5-7 mm.

In places of strong roundings, make notches so that the hood fits more smoothly. We turn the product over to the front side, and, stepping back from the joining line about 0.5 cm, fasten the internal seam allowance, having first pressed it down (first by hand basting, and then by running a stitch along the entire lower part).
To make the result better visible, iron all seams.

Did you know? The only church for dogs is in the USA, where it was built in the 19th century by artist Stefan Hanek. This is how he expressed his gratitude to his own five Labradors, who helped him overcome a serious illness.

When upper part When it’s ready, turn the lining inside out again (lifting it up) and process the edges of the pants. We fold the front part of the pant lining with the front side of the main material, and then put each pant leg from the lining onto a similar part of the main material (just turn it inside out).

The seams on both materials must match. When combined correctly, the front of the lining will be underneath and adjacent to the front of the main fabric. To prevent the seams of the trousers from moving out, it is better to pin them with a pin.
For greater convenience of work, you can tuck the sleeves and all unnecessary parts inside, leaving only the side seam of the overalls that has not yet been sewn. We combine the cuts on both types of fabric (on both sides) with each other and chop them off. At the same time, the lock strap should be moved a little higher so that it does not interfere with work.

Important! It's better to fix it first chest part, simultaneously stretching the elastic band, and only then move down to the pants.

Once you have basted all the pieces in a circle, sew a stitch and cut off the excess, leaving only 0.5 cm from the seam. Next, on the sleeve we find the hole left earlier and carefully turn the entire product through it, then tucking each part into the place reserved for it.

We smooth the edge of the overalls with an iron and, stepping back 0.5 cm from it, lay a decorative circular stitch (through the hood), and sew the parts with the elastic in a zigzag. At this stage, all that remains is to hem the overalls from the bottom, process the sleeves and legs, and also sew Velcro onto the hood.

Let's start with the pants. We turn the legs inside out and, having secured the lining with padding polyester, we fold in the remaining part of the main fabric, sewing holes for the legs in a circle. Having finished with the legs, we move on to the sleeves.
First, let's sew up the hole through which we turned our overalls inside out. To do this, we turn the fabric allowances inward, baste the two edges of the material, and then stitch them on top.

We move to the outer part of the sleeve and sew on the lining so that later we can fold the allowances of the main fabric and sew the holes in a circle. Try to make sure that the lining does not stretch, but protrudes slightly beyond inseam hem, otherwise when the dog moves, unsightly folds will appear on the outer part of the overalls.

Sew more Velcro onto the hood and that’s it - you have ready-made clothes for your pet.

Small breeds of dogs need clothing not only because of fashion, but also because of the lack of undercoat or hair itself (Chinese Crested, for example) and for this reason they are constantly cold and can even get sick due to hypothermia. Patterns for creating cute and comfy dog clothes are completely different today, but we will present the most popular ones.

Let's look at the main types of clothing for small dog breeds

Functional clothing– things used for autumn-winter-spring walks: these are jackets made of light but waterproof material, warmer fur coats or down jackets, as well as safety shoes.

Decorative clothing- it includes things that do not carry any functional load, but serving for purely aesthetic purposes. This various dresses, blouses, pants, T-shirts and other things that, in their assortment, are close to the human wardrobe.

Buying ready-made clothes for your pets or sewing them yourself is a matter of taste and wallet for each individual owner. This article will talk about how to sew clothes for your dog without spending a large amount of money, because you can use your old boring things, such as a jacket or jeans.

Let's look at how to sew clothes for a dog using a pattern, using the example of a sports overall for a Chihuahua. For work we will need: a sheet of paper, fabric (preferably cotton or knitted velor), threads in the color of the fabric, sewing machine(you can do without it - the overalls are not large size), rhinestones or other decorations at your request.

Stages of sewing overalls for a domestic dog using patterns

First, we make a pattern on paper, if necessary, adjusting it according to the size of your dog. To construct this pattern, a 2*2 cm cage is used, the length of the dog’s back is 22 cm.

At this stage, it is important to correctly construct all the clothing patterns for the dog, and several nuances must be taken into account: the gender of the animal, the volume of fur, skin folds, nails, tail, freedom of movement. It is also important to take into account the characteristics of each specific breed: for example, when sewing clothes for Yorkies, you need to make an allowance for freedom of movement, taking into account the volume of fur, and in clothes for a French bulldog there should be a wider neck, since dogs of this breed have a thick and massive neck .

We cut out the finished pattern and transfer it to the fabric, leaving 1 - 2 cm for allowances, taking into account all the features of your dog. We sweep the product along the seams and try the overalls on the dog. After we are convinced that it is in season and the animal feels comfortable in it, we finally sew it together. Glue rhinestones, sew on stripes or other decorations that you have prepared. The end result should be a suit like this.

By analogy with this costume, you can sew several more models of clothing for a Chihuahua (for example, a raincoat or a poncho with a hood). Dogs of this breed have delicate skin and quickly lose heat, so to protect against scratches, it is recommended to wear it at all times, regardless of the weather.

Warm clothing is also necessary for dog breeds such as the Chinese Crested and Toy Terrier. The fact is that the Chinese Crested has practically no hair, and the Terriers have no undercoat, as a result of which these dogs almost constantly freeze, even in an apartment.

We are trying to study popular types of shoes for small breeds

In addition to clothes, winter time for dogs small breeds Shoes are also needed to protect the paws from glass shards, garbage and chemicals that are sprinkled on the streets in cities. Shoes, like clothes, can easily be made from old things, such as a woolen jacket. The sole is usually made from genuine leather, suede or other waterproof materials. Winter shoes are usually lined with fur, padding polyester, fleece or other insulating materials. To keep the boots securely on the paws, Velcro, buckles, and elastic bands are used.

As an example, I suggest looking at a few photos with shoe options for your pets, which you can make yourself:

  • When sewing shoes, the main thing is not to allow the elastic bands to put too much pressure on the limbs, otherwise blood circulation will be disrupted and the paws will quickly freeze. To create a shoe pattern, you need to put the dog on a sheet of paper, outline the paws (note that the front and hind limbs different in size) and add 10 - 12mm for a loose fit.
  • Today on the Internet there is large number sites offering free download of clothing and shoe patterns for dogs various breeds. On the one hand, this is very convenient - you don’t need to bother with drawings. It is enough to print out the pattern and start sewing, but such ready-made drawings, as a rule, do not take into account the characteristics of an individual dog and it may happen that the downloaded pattern will not suit your pet.
  • In any case, regardless of whether you download a ready-made pattern or draw it yourself, making clothes for your dog with your own hands will allow you not only to dress your pet in comfortable clothes, but also to create his individual wardrobe, which will not be similar to any other dogs.

As an example, I offer several photographs with original clothes for dogs.

We offer you master classes that will tell you how to sew clothes for dogs with your own hands: blanket, overalls, vest, hat, boots.

Clothes for dogs - how to make a vest

First you need to take measurements of your pet. It's better to do it together. Let one person treat the dog to something tasty, and the second takes measurements. Here's what you need to know to sew a vest, and subsequently a jumpsuit:
  1. length of the back from the neck to the root of the tail;
  2. chest circumference (the widest part of the sternum);
  3. abdominal volume;
  4. neck circumference (at its widest point);
  5. distance from the point of growth of the paws to the beginning of the neck;
  6. the length of the segment from the hind limbs to the forelimbs;
  7. thigh circumference of the hind leg;
  8. front paw circumference;
  9. neck height;
  10. length from the front paw to the genitals (for boys);
  11. head circumference.
You will also need a measure showing the distance along the sternum from one to the second front leg.

The presented dog clothing pattern will help you sew a vest for your pet - this is one of the simplest outfits for a four-legged dog.

First of all, you need to determine the size of the side of the square in the drawing. To do this, divide measurement No. 1 (the length of the back from the neck to the root of the tail) by 10. Let's say this first value is 20 cm, divide by 10, you get 2. This means that the sides of all squares will be equal to two cm.

Take tracing paper, whatman paper or special graph paper for patterns. Draw longitudinal and transverse segments here. For the back, you should end up with 11 squares horizontally and 7 squares vertically. For the front - the same amount horizontally and 3 vertically.

On the upper section, set aside the length of the back. Where it says “head” on the pattern, you need to set aside the neck circumference. In this example, it is 26.5 cm: 13 cm on the back and 3.5 on the chest.

If your dog has different proportions, make adjustments to the pattern, do not forget to add cm to the measurements for a loose fit, since dog clothes should not be tight.

Transfer the measurements of the abdominal volume and the girth of the front paw to the pattern. Please note that you will be placing the pattern on fabric that you have previously folded in half. The front of the vest is folded, and 2 parts are cut out for the back.

Similar patterns for dogs will help you sew convenient and comfortable clothes for your animal. It is better to make a vest from fleece. This fabric is practical, soft, and does not fray. In such clothes the animal will not be too cold to walk on a dry autumn evening.

Next, these patterns for dogs - the front and back of the vest, need to be transferred to the fabric folded in half. Redraw the contours of the details, adding a loose fit. Cut along the outline, leaving 7mm for seam allowance.

Sew the sides, matching point C to C and D to D. Edge the neckline, armholes, and bottom of the vest with contrasting fabric. Sew in a zipper on the back and it’s time to put the new thing on your pet.

Instead of a zipper, you can sew Velcro on the back.

If you know how to knit, these patterns for dogs will help you make a knitted vest. Using the same presented diagram, create another new thing.

First you need to knit a sample, determine how many loops are in 1 cm. Cast on required quantity and start working from the waist line from the back. Periodically apply your work to the pattern to determine where you need to bind off stitches and where to cast them on.

But it’s better to knit a one-piece dog vest; you can sew buttons on the tummy. Start with the ribbed pattern and use it to decorate the sleeves and neckline. If you knit braids on the back, the vest will turn out even more beautiful.

How to sew a jumpsuit for a pet?

This pattern is suitable for a Toy Terrier or other small dog.

If you are sewing an autumn or winter jumpsuit from fleece, then it is enough to make it in one layer. This will be comfortable in dry, not very cool weather. If you need warm clothes for dogs, you can sew a winter overall with your own hands, consisting of three layers:
  • waterproof top (for example, made from Bologna fabric);
  • padding polyester;
  • linings.

Speaking about how to sew a jumpsuit, it must be said that it can be made from unnecessary things - a Bolognese jacket, a coat that has gone out of fashion.

If you do not have such things, then for the update you will need
  • waterproof fabric;
  • lining fabric is silk or flannel (you can take a diaper left over from the child);
  • padding polyester;
  • lightning;
  • a piece of plastic;
  • rubber.

You already know how to determine the scale. Redraw the pattern onto paper. Now you need to apply it to two types of fabric (lining and main) and to padding polyester. Cut with seam allowances.

Sew a jumpsuit from the main fabric. And for the second half, put the padding polyester parts on the lining parts and sew the second overalls.

Stitch it with the first one so that the seams are inside - between the main fabric and the lining, connecting on the sleeves, at the bottom of the panties. Turn it onto the face through the not yet sewn top of the overalls.

Delay the bottom of the sleeves and panties, insert an elastic band into these drawstrings. Cut a visor from plastic according to the pattern. Place it between exactly the same parts of the main fabric and the lining, stitch along the edge.

Place the visor between the two layers of the hood and sew it on. If you don’t want to make it, then stitch the hood along the edge and insert a drawstring or elastic band here so that it fits snugly enough to the head. Here's how to sew a pet onesie at home.

We sew a hat, boots, blanket with our own hands

After the clothes for the dogs are made, sew beautiful shoes with your own hands. After all, during the cold season, reagents are scattered on city streets. To prevent dogs from stepping on them, sharp stones, splinters with their paws, protect the animals’ feet with shoes.

To sew boots, take:
  • warm dense fabric (fleece or drape);
  • skin;
  • threads;
  • ribbons and limiters for them;
  • hole punch
Redraw the pattern. Cut from soft fabric 2 parts for the tops, and leather for the soles.

You can sew shoes for dogs using thread and a needle, without the help of a machine. Stitch the details. Make holes along the top of the boots with a hole punch. If this tool is not available, use a knife. Thread some ribbons here to tie your shoes. Place restraints or tie knots at the ends of the ropes.

And for this pattern of a dog hat you need a transparent sheet of paper or file. Enlarge the presented diagram and redraw it.

Place one and the other half of the hat to the back. Stitch along the dotted line. Sew the visor so that it holds its shape, put cardboard or plastic inside. This type of hat is two-layer and consists of main and soft lining fabric.

If you want to tie a headdress on an animal, then shorten the pattern of the sides, and sew ribbons just below the visor.

For beginner seamstresses, we can advise you to make a blanket for your four-legged friend. In such a cape, the dog’s body will not freeze, it will not be afraid of winds and slight cold snaps.

These clothes are very easy to make. You need to redraw the patterns on paper with your own hands, marking the dimensions of your dog.

As you can see, the blanket is cut out in the form of an apron. Ribbons will help tie it on the animal. Such a cape can be sewn from one fabric or made into a two- or three-layer blanket.

Now you know how to make clothes for dogs with your own hands using a pattern. If you adore your pet, make a house or a soft bed so that he can rest there.

How to make a house, a bed for animals?

You can make a shelter for medium or small dog from cardboard box. Look at how the parts are arranged.

You need to unfold the box, fold its bottom and sides so that they form a floor, 2 walls and two halves of a gable roof. From the small sides, make 2 narrow acute-angled sides on the roof, cutting a round hole in one of them so that the animal can easily pass through it.

Make a dog house in such a way that the animal fits freely there, can stretch out to its full length and turn around.

Housing made of cardboard is the simplest option. Sew the house from thick foam rubber so that it holds its shape. To do this, take:
  • thick fabric;
  • foam rubber 5–8 cm thick;
  • wide braid for finishing;
  • scissors;
  • pencil;
  • a compass or a frying pan lid.
First determine the size of the house. Its height is the dog's height multiplied by 1.5. The size of the walls should be such that the pet can stretch out there, freely enter, exit, and turn around.

Based on the previous photo, highlight the details:

  • one - gender;
  • two - wide walls;
  • 2 - roofs;
  • two - narrow walls (one of them with an opening for entry).
You need to cut out the floor from the fabric - two pieces for each piece, plus 1.5–2 cm seam allowances on each side; and from foam rubber one of the same kind and without allowances. Place the 2 floor pieces right sides together and stitch along three edges. After the fourth turn, turn it out. Place the cut sheet of foam rubber here, fold the edges of the fabric inward, and stitch it.

Also decorate the details of the roof and sidewalls. From the entrance side, cut a hole according to the lid of a frying pan or other template, and edge it with braid.

The entrance to the house can be either round or rectangular. If you wish, cut it into an arch shape.

Sew the parts together, following the photo hint, and you can invite your pet to celebrate a housewarming in their new home!

There are simpler options for designing a dog’s resting place. Make a bed for your pet. It consists of a bottom and three or four sides. If they are tall, make 3 so that the dog can comfortably enter here.

The bottom is oval, round or rectangular. It is sewn from the top and bottom thick fabric. Soft foam rubber is placed inside. Now you need to measure the perimeter of the bottom and cut out the sides of the bed to that length.

Sew a one-piece side, consisting of top and bottom fabric, put foam rubber inside. If the bottom edging is square, stitch around the corners. Then the sides will have a shape.

Here's how to make a dog bed or house for your dog. It remains to tell you how to sew a bag, because owners of small animals often carry dogs. It’s not very convenient to hold them in your hands; it’s much better to transport them in a special bag.

Should I buy a carrier or make one myself?

See how interesting it is to sew such a thing with your own hands. For it you will need:

  • durable fabric (you can take raincoat fabric);
  • thin foam rubber or cardboard;
  • lining fabric;
  • centimeter;
  • threads with a needle;
  • pins;
  • chalk;
  • ruler;
  • scissors.

  1. In order to sew a dog carrier, you need to measure the height, length, width of the pet. Add a few cm so that it does not hinder the animal’s movements. In this example, the height of the bag is 28 and the width is 20 cm. For this you need to cut out a fabric measuring 76 by 35 cm, plus a seam allowance of 3 cm (since the stitching slightly reduces the fabric).
  2. To make a bag quilted, place the lining on the right side, cardboard of the same size on it, and the main fabric on top of it, right side up.
  3. Pin the resulting “sandwich” along the edges. Using a chalk and ruler, draw horizontal and vertical lines to create squares. They can be small, but to make the work easier, make them large, for example with sides of 7-9 cm.
  4. Sew the lines along the markings, remove the pins. Now fold the fabric right sides together, bringing the smaller edge to the same one (35 cm). Make a seam on one side and a symmetrical one on the other side. Below, on the wrong side, stitch 4 corners. They will indicate the bottom and sides. In this case, we sew two corners on one side and 2 on the other.
  5. Sew in the zipper. If you want the dog to sometimes lie down in the bag to rest, then do not make a recess for the head. If you want to decorate this detail, make a semicircular cutout at the top of the small sidewall and process it. But it should not be too large so that the dog, for example, being frightened by something, cannot jump out of the carrier.
  6. Make the handles of the bag a convenient length for you so that you can hang it on your shoulder if you wish.
Here's how much you can make yourself for your pet. We invite you to see how to sew clothes for dogs with your own hands, so that you can even better understand some of the nuances of this interesting and useful activity:

In sultry frosts, people keep warm with warm clothes. Bad weather also causes discomfort for dogs; it is especially difficult in winter for certain breeds that are not accustomed to the harsh climate. Clothes for dogs can be made with your own hands using the patterns presented, and they are designed not only to warm your four-legged friend, but also to dress them up, providing you with an original and fashionable wardrobe.

How to properly measure a dog

To ensure that the clothing meets the required parameters, fits the dog perfectly and does not cause discomfort, it is important to take measurements correctly.

  1. It is better to take measurements from a dog when it is standing, fully resting on its paws.
  2. To measure the neck, a rope is tied around it. This determines the length from the beginning of the neck to the end of the body. This line corresponds to the dimensions of the free collar.
  3. The back is measured in the center. The actual size corresponds to the distance from the withers to the base of the tail. The tail is raised or in a standing state. It is better to position the pet so that the owner can see the side.

    The dog should stand straight, not hunched over, or lower its head.

  4. The chest volume is measured behind the front legs. There is the widest part of the animal’s body (including cats).
  5. The overall waist circumference of girls is measured in front of the hind legs. For boys, this is the area in front of the genitals.
  6. The distance between the paws is determined by measuring the length from the front paw to the hind thigh. The dog should stand sideways to the owner.
  7. The length of the sleeves is measured from the middle of the back (spine).

Add 1-3 centimeters to the pattern when cutting the material. This is necessary so that the dog’s clothes fit loosely and do not press the fur.

Material

Some owners prefer to dress the animal not only in winter, but also in summer. Veterinarians advise against doing this.

In the heat and heat, your pet’s skin needs to breathe. And only in the evening, in cool weather, can you put on a T-shirt or T-shirt made of natural fabric - cotton, knitwear - on the dog.

If we're talking about In case of rainy autumn, preference should be given to waterproof material - raincoat fabric, bologna.

As for winter, you should approach the choice of clothing for your pet with all responsibility. Under a jacket or bologna overalls, wear a warm sweater, better knitted with your own hands. To prevent your dog from freezing, a good option for warming him up would be fur, fleece, or padding polyester lining.

Constructing a pattern

To create a pattern, you first need to draw a rectangle. One side is equal to the length of the future clothing. Points are marked in the figure that correspond to the dimensions of the chest and waist. Afterwards the width of the back is indicated and, if necessary, the pattern line is extended.

The width of the backrest is divided into 2 equal parts. This results in an intersection point. A third of the circumference of the pet’s neck is measured from it. If you connect the points with a semicircular line, you will get the neck parameters. After this, the size of the hole for the dog's paws and tail is calculated.

As for the finished pattern, everything is much simpler here. The selected diagram is transferred to graph paper and cut out in accordance with the dog’s parameters. The finished elements are laid out on fabric, cut out, and then stitched. Next, the neck and sleeves are processed.

How to sew your own clothes

Housewives sticking to fashion trends, do not miss the opportunity to dress up their pets, purchasing a wide variety of clothes for four-legged animals from famous brands.

However, dogs do not always need clothes only to demonstrate the refined taste of the owner. Chihuahuas, Yorkies, short-haired dachshunds, and toy terriers are most susceptible to adverse weather conditions. What can we say about the Mexican hairless dog, the American hairless terrier, the “orchid”? Their bodies will quickly freeze under the influence of Russian frosts.

Overalls

Overalls are needed not only for pets with short hair, who always freeze in cold weather, but also for long-haired dogs.

This item of clothing will protect the animal from severe frosts, dust, dirt, and slush. The owner will not have to wash and comb the dog every time after a walk, removing all kinds of Velcro from it.

Pattern for warm overalls.

It can also be used as workwear. To determine the length of the cage, the length of the back is measured. To do this, a flexible centimeter is stretched from the withers to the base of the tail. The resulting length is divided by 8. For example, 50 cm: 8 = 6.25 cm. This will be the size of one cell.

Costume

If the dog owner does not want to see his pet dirty after a walk or does not want him to freeze, it is advisable to sew him a warm suit.

The cut should be comfortable so as not to restrict the dog’s movements. As for the fabric, it is selected depending on the weather. If we are talking about autumn, then the best option there will be waterproof material. At the same time, increase the pattern by a few centimeters and repeat it on the fabric used. Then both patterns are sewn together, the clasp and cuffs are inserted. Now you don’t have to put off your walk, even if it’s raining outside.

Raincoat

The main rule for sewing a raincoat is the choice of fabric. For small dogs it is better to purchase soft and thin material, for large dogs - dense and durable. You should not give preference to cheap materials so that the skin does not overheat. The fabric from which the raincoat is made should not bunch up, irritate the dog with rustling noise, or slip off. Therefore, the material should be approached responsibly.

blanket

Unlike overalls, blankets are much more comfortable for a dog to wear. They do not restrict movement, are easy to put on, and are made of lightweight materials.

Dogs may need blankets in 3 cases:

  1. After the operation, it is put on the stomach and fixed on the back so that the pet does not lick the stitches. Blankets are sewn from natural materials - cotton, linen, knitwear. Synthetic fabrics You should not use it, otherwise the wound will swell, sweat, and overheat.
  2. For walking in cold weather. Sewn from warm materials - fur, wool, felt. Such clothing will protect the dog from hypothermia.
  3. For a walk in rainy weather. Made from waterproof materials.

Velcro, strings, and buttons are used to secure the blanket.

Sweater

The dog will need a jacket in cold, windy weather. If executed correctly, the proposed pattern is suitable even for the most active doggies, since movements are absolutely not constrained.

For brightness, you can sew small details, decorative elements, patterns, stripes, pockets, zippers, and so on on the back.

Dresses

A four-legged fashionista in a dress always causes affection among owners or others on a summer walk. In order to create a beautiful sundress for a pet, you do not need to have the skills of a professional. Even novice seamstresses can sew a dress for their beloved dog. Everything is done according to the pattern, and then the item is complemented with decorative elements.

Any openwork fabric, lace and multi-colored ribbons are used for this. The more elements are used, the more elegant the dress will look.

For the skirt you will need a lace ribbon. Its width should be equal to the dog’s waist (measurement taken in front of the hind legs).

Patterns for dresses

Vest

The vest is good for walking in cold and cool weather. In cold weather, it is worn over overalls and a sweater.

The length of the cage in the proposed pattern is equal to the distance from the collar to the base of the tail, divided by 10. So, if the length of the back is 30 centimeters, then the size of the cage will be 3 centimeters.

Pattern for a vest

The material used for this is different. It can be raincoat fabric, soft drape, fur, flannel, knitwear, bologna and so on. If you plan to sew a vest with a lining or wear it over overalls, then an allowance is made on the back for the fastener.

Jacket

To protect your pet from bad weather, be it rain, snow, wind or frost, you need to sew a jacket. For winter it is preferable to use a lining.

If you plan to wear it over a sweater or overalls, add 1-3 centimeters to the pattern. The autumn jacket is made from waterproof materials.

T-shirt, panties

The T-shirt is worn on a dog on a cool summer evening.

It is sewn from natural materials so that the pet’s skin can breathe: cotton, linen, knitwear. For this, use a regular children's T-shirt or turtleneck. You only need 2 parts. The one on the left is the back, the one on the right is the tummy.

Pattern for a T-shirt

Briefs are needed during heat, to prevent other dogs from approaching the dog during a walk, or immediately after giving birth. We are talking about sanitary panties, which must include a pad. They will protect furniture and floors from bloody discharge.

The simplest option for sewing panties for a dog is old children's tights. All you need to do is step back a few centimeters from the crotch and cut off the excess tissue. After this, a hole is made for the tail. The cutting line needs to be hemmed.

The main thing is that the elastic band of the tights does not put pressure on the dog’s stomach and does not fall off. If the dog pulls off his panties, then the remaining parts of the tights are used as suspenders.

There is a more complex version of dog pants with a pattern.

T-shirt

The T-shirt is ideal for a summer walk in evening time when there is a chill in the air. You can sew it from an unwanted children's T-shirt. It is better if it is made from natural materials. This is how your pet's skin breathes.

Some dogs have hats in their wardrobe. Some will think that this is the owner's whim. However, veterinarians call caps and Panama hats essential for dogs in sunny weather. A hat won't hurt even in severe frosts. They are sewn from durable material lined with fur or wool.

Shoes

Buying boots for a four-legged pet is not difficult. However, no one can guarantee that the animal will be comfortable in them. Therefore, it is better to make shoes for the dog with your own hands. Here you can take into account all the features of your pet - the angle of elevation, the size and position of the paws, the height of the boot. But the most important thing is that sewing or knitting boots for a dog is not at all difficult, especially since detailed descriptions and diagrams.

Some useful tips:

  1. Shoes for dogs should be sewn in pairs, since the size of the back and front slippers differ from each other.
  2. Boots should not slip, so a rough material is selected for the sole.
  3. Shoes should not be tight. Therefore, it is more advisable to leave a reserve. Otherwise the dog will refuse to wear it.
  4. For accurate measurements, the dog must stand upright, fully resting on its paws.
  5. Buttons and zippers are not used as fasteners. It is better if it is an elastic band, Velcro, or tape with a fastener. The fasteners should not squeeze the paws, otherwise blood circulation will be disrupted and the dog will quickly freeze.
  6. To prevent shoes from chafing, the seams are made on the outside.

Measurements for dog clothing are taken from the animal. only in a standing position and on a flat surface.

Back length– this is the distance from the withers to the base of the tail.

Bust– measured at the widest point of the sternum.

Neck circumference– the measurement is also made – at the widest point on the neck. For this indicator, it is not necessary to measure the dog - you can simply measure its collar.

Waist circumference– measured across the stomach.

Paw length– all 4 paws are measured from the base.

Additionally, if the product requires it, the following are measured:

  • chest width- distance between two bases humerus front paws;
  • back width- the distance along the back between the two hip joints;
  • belly length- measurements are taken between the front and rear pairs of paws;
  • total product length– from neck to waist;
  • for hats - distance between ears, as well as head circumference.

What material should I use?

For making dog clothes It is best to use natural fabrics and yarns, such as cotton. Clothing made from such material allows the skin to breathe, is pleasant to the touch, does not cause allergies, irritation, does not electrify or wrinkle. In addition, cotton clothes do not fade when washed and do not fade in the sun for a long time.

From artificial fabrics, microfiber, neoprene, polyester, viscose are perfect. These fabrics were created taking into account physiological characteristics living organisms in various weather conditions. They have increased wear resistance, excellent thermal insulation, remove moisture from the skin, protect well from wind and are hypoallergenic.

Silk, satin, and polyester lining fabrics such as taffeta are used for lining. Such materials were chosen for a reason; the fact is that clothes with a slippery lining are much easier to use. The slippery lining will prevent the wool from tangling or matting. This is especially true for long-haired breeds.

When sewing warm clothes, fleece, padding polyester, and padding polyester are used as lining and insulation.

For knitters, we can recommend using all types of natural yarn, as well as acrylic, which is widely available in all handicraft stores. For breeds prone to allergies and skin irritations, yarn from the “Baby” series is perfect. They are hypoallergenic, created on the basis of acrylic yarn with a small percentage of various natural and artificial additives.

How to draw a pattern?

A pattern is a detail of a future product made of paper, tracing paper, fabric, leather or other materials.

DIY dog clothes - sequence of steps when creating a pattern:

  1. On the sheet in the upper left corner we put point A. It will be the beginning of the drawing, we will start from it.
  2. From point A we lay a horizontal line corresponding to the dimensions of the back length (from the neck to the waist). Marked with the letter B.
  3. On the resulting segment A - B, from point A we measure the distance from the front paws to the waist. We put point W on the mark. We have a straight line with points A, W, B. Where the segment A - W is the length from the waist to the front paws, and W - B is the distance from the front paws to the neck.
  4. From these three points we draw vertical lines down.
  5. On vertical segment A, downwards, measure a distance equal to half the chest circumference and another 1.5 cm. Mark it with point D.
  6. On line Ш we mark a segment similar to line A - D, put a mark E.
  7. From segment B downwards, measure half of the width of the back with an increase of 0.5 cm, place point C. On this line, additionally measure 6 cm from point B, place point K.
  8. From point K we measure 4 cm to the right, put point L and connect points B - L with a concave semicircle towards the entire drawing. The result is a neck.
  9. From point D, through point E, draw a horizontal line equal to the length of the abdomen, from the neck to the waist. We put a point F. From it, back we measure 4.5-5 cm on a straight line and put a mark G.
  10. From this mark we measure upward a segment corresponding to half the width of the chest, plus 0.5 cm. At the end of the mark we place a point G.
  11. From point F we measure upward 3 cm and mark it with point F1. From F1 to the right we mark 1 cm. This will be point I. We connect points I - F with a smooth line. We also connect I - F with a horizontal straight line.
  12. On the vertical segments G - G and E - W, we set aside half the distance between the front paws from bottom to top, put marks on the first segment - M, on the second - M1. We connect them with a horizontal line. We divide the line in half and mark the middle with a point P.
  13. Similarly, we divide the segment K - L in half. We mark the middle with the letter P. From P we draw down the vertical O. Between O and L we draw a straight line. The distance between O - L should be equal to the distance between F - I.
  14. We find C and lay horizontal straight lines from it in both directions until they intersect with the segments P - O and W - E. We mark the intersection points with the icons C1, C2. We divide the resulting segment C1 - C2 in half, marking the middle with point B.
  15. We divide the segment C2 - M1 in half and mark it with a point H.
  16. We draw a smooth line along the points: O, B, N, R, F. We have an armhole.
  17. From point H we draw a horizontal line to the vertical line A - D. We mark it with point C. From it in both directions on the segment A - D we measure a quarter of the difference between the waist and chest circumference. We put marks X and Z. We connect these marks with straight lines to point H.

As a result we have a basic pattern, with which you can sew any clothes for your pet. Patterns for small breed dogs are made exactly this way, following the sequence described above.

Popular clothing models

Basically, such clothes are used by owners of short-haired dogs (up to 10 kg). In the harsh Russian climate, these dogs, being outdoors, unable to maintain body temperature for a long time.

Clothing for pets is not so much a fashion statement as a vital necessity.

Today the most popular clothes are:

  • overalls varying degrees insulation;
  • jackets;
  • windbreakers;
  • raincoats;
  • warm jumpers;
  • vests

For the summer season, the assortment is not so wide, mainly all kinds T-shirts, dresses, raincoats and light vests. Only raincoats have more or less serious functionality. The rest of the summer season clothing is used mostly for beauty.

Sewing techniques and subtleties

Pay attention to whether the fabric stretches or not.

For stretchy fabrics, tight-fitting silhouettes work well. No additional allowance is required for freedom of movement.

But in order for the dog to feel comfortable in clothes made of non-elastic materials, to the measurements taken, before creating the pattern, you need add 3-4 centimeters. This is especially true for the neck and chest.

The finished product should not press or interfere with free movement. The pattern of overalls for dogs, the comfortable cut does not restrict the pet’s mobility.

Locks, fasteners, and Velcro are best done on the back, not on the stomach. This will make it easier for you and your dog to get dressed and buttoned up.

Pay attention to the fasteners. If the dog long wool– make sure that it doesn’t get stuck in the lock every time, decorate finished clothes with buttons or baby Velcro that do not catch wool.

It would be a good idea to provide straps and carabiners that allow you to adjust the clothes to your figure as comfortably as possible.

As you can see, it’s not at all difficult to sew or knit a new thing for your furry friend. Clothing made to individual measurements fits better and has a unique appearance.
