    There are actually three ways to adjust pointer precision in Windows:

    • a well-known method in the mouse settings;
    • setting up cursor movement using the keyboard;
    • driver settings.

    Adjusting mouse pointer precision

    This is the easiest way to improve the accuracy of the mouse pointer, and it is well known to most users.

    In Windows 7/Vista you need to go to the following path:

    Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Mouse.

    A window will open Properties: Mouse. In it we go to the tab Pointer Options and check the box Enable increased pointer accuracy. It couldn’t be simpler, the accuracy of the pointer will increase dramatically, and it will no longer dangle around the desktop like crazy.

    In Windows XP, a similar window can be opened by selecting the command Start > Control Panel > Printers and Other Controls > Mouse(unless classic access is selected). Next you need to check the same box.

    Setting the keyboard to move the mouse pointer

    But this is more interesting and many people do not know this possibility. The mouse cursor can also be controlled from the keyboard, which is very useful for designers of all stripes when you need to move just a few pixels. In this case, the numeric keypad will be used for control.

    To set up such a move in Windows 7, follow this path:

    Start > Control Panel > Accessibility and click on the link Changing mouse settings in the field Accessibility Center. A window like this will open.

    In this window, check the box Enable keyboard pointer control and then click on the link Setting up pointer control.

    A new window will open, which presents a lot of interesting parameters. Don't forget - these are parameters for moving the pointer using the keyboard and nothing else.

    As you can see, there are enough parameters. Mainly you need to check the box Enable mouse pointer control from keyboard. But that's not all. Now, for this mode to work, you need to click the indicated in the field Keyboard shortcut combination, namely Alt left + Shift left + NUM LOCK. A warning will appear (can be disabled), in which we click on the button OK and the mode will be activated. You can now move your mouse pointer using the numeric keypad.

    As you can see, there are other parameters in the window, where you can adjust the speed of the pointer movement, select the keys that can be used to accelerate or slow down the movement, etc. Feel free to experiment and select the parameters that suit you best.

    The same access option is available in Windows XP. Follow the path:

    Start > Control Panel > Accessibility. A window will open Accessibility, in which go to the tab Mouse. Check the box Keyboard control and click on the button Settings.

    A window will open Setting up keyboard pointer control. It has fewer parameters than a similar window in Windows 7, but that's enough for us :) Customize it to your liking.

    Adjusting pointer precision in the mouse driver

    We have already figured out the accuracy of the pointer using Windows and when moving using the keyboard. Things get much more interesting if you have a mouse for which a separate driver is installed.

    Of course, the mouse can work without a driver, you just need to connect it, any mouse at that. However, there are a ton of cool mice available now that are primarily aimed at gamers. And they come with drivers in which just a ton of cool parameters are available.

    And it comes with drivers in which you can configure a lot of interesting things. For example, assign the mouse port polling frequency, and of course the sensitivity in dpi, to the buttons different actions etc.

    However, that's not all. We are talking about increasing the accuracy of the pointer. To do this, the driver window has two tabs, Sensitivity And Advanced Settings. On the tab Sensitivity you should click on the link Acceleration: ON, located at the very bottom. We will not delve into the intricacies of setting up this particular mouse - the main thing is to show the principle of setting the accuracy of the pointer.

    Important: If you enable precision mode in your mouse driver, disable it in Windows. This is the same checkbox in the first picture in this article. Otherwise, there may be problems with the operation of this mode. The mode implemented in the driver is usually more accurate than the mode in Windows, so this is in your best interests :)
