The Optimus Sol is not one of those devices that attracts attention with its design. Undoubtedly, the abundance of gloss adds gloss to the smartphone, but only as long as it lies on the table. As soon as you pick it up, the body is immediately covered with traces of fingerprints. We saw something similar in LG BL40. The first few days you can’t stop admiring the smooth black surface. Over time, you begin to notice how more and more scratches appear on it, and after a month the case looks as if it had been used for a whole year.

Due to the slightly smaller diagonal (3.8" versus 4" in Samsung Galaxy S), the display is sharper, but this difference is not easy to notice with the naked eye. Otherwise, we have a typical matrix on organic crystals. No backlight is used to display black, making it appear as realistic as possible. Unlike Super AMOLED and Super AMOLED Plus displays, the LG's colors change slightly when viewed from an angle. For example, gray, goes to greenish tint, and bright red loses its saturation.

The design of the LG Optimus Sol communicator can be called classic: a black monoblock body with rounded edges and complete absence buttons on the front panel. Since the manufacturer's mark is located on the back of the communicator, it is difficult to determine at first glance what kind of mobile computer it is. Most of all, the LG Optimus Sol is reminiscent of the first generation, and with further acquaintance with the device, the feeling of deja vu only intensified.

The mass of the communicator, its dimensions, the location of the controls - almost everything is perfect, verified and calculated. Undoubtedly, LG engineers and designers took into account the experience of producing mobile computers of this type and tried to provide for all the little details. For example, the lower part of the communicator body tapers into a wedge shape, making it convenient to place the device in any container. The black color of the plastic, again, does not raise any questions or surprises and is designed for the tastes of the mass consumer. However, the design of the LG Optimus Sol has a small highlight - it is a stylish bevel of the plastic cover on the left and right sides (it’s just a pity that it’s hard to see due to the same colors of all the parts).

There are no complaints about the assembly of the communicator; there is no play or creaking. The only flaw in the design is the glossy back cover, which is extremely susceptible to scratches: the sample we tested was already fairly covered with them.

The dimensions and shape of the LG Optimus Sol are almost optimal for daily use. The communicator fits equally well in the palm of your hand and in your pocket. When working with the device, the only thing missing is hardware keys: both on the front panel and on the ends (for example, to control the camera).

On the front panel of the communicator, in addition to the display, there are: ambient light and proximity sensors, additional camera for video calls, telephone speaker and touch buttons. The last three are accompanied by hints on English, informing about the purpose of each button. Unfortunately, tooltips, unlike icons, are not illuminated from the inside, and their small size and dim color make them difficult to see.

There is a microphone at the bottom of the front panel of the communicator.

The rear panel of the LG Optimus Sol case is a monolithic battery cover. It has holes for the lens of the main camera of the communicator and its speaker. Removing and installing the cover is not a serious problem; it can be easily lifted with a fingernail and removed from the latches. The microSD memory card can be replaced without disconnecting the battery, but you still have to remove the battery to change the SIM card.

There are practically no controls on the side edges of the communicator's body. There is only a volume control key on the left.

The bottom end of the case is empty, all connectors are concentrated at the top of the device. There, at the top end, tightly located: a power control key, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, an additional microphone and a Micro-USB connector covered with a plug.

Subjective impressions of the communicator are mixed: there are no serious complaints about the design, but the feeling of secondary and unpretentiousness of the design did not leave the entire time we got acquainted.

Software and Settings

LG mobile computers have always been distinguished by a large amount of pre-installed additional software: useful and not very useful. The LG Optimus Sol was no exception.

The communicator is equipped with the Android 2.3.4 operating system (Gingerbread), on top of which the proprietary LG Optimus UI 2.0 shell runs. Externally, this shell looks completely unnoticeable and does not radically change anything in the control of the communicator - unlike, for example, HTC Sense. Notable innovations include: an original mechanism for unlocking the communicator, the ability to change the set of icons for the most used applications at the bottom of the main screen of the system, convenient control of the arrangement of widgets on seven shell tabs.

In addition, the management of installed applications is organized in an original way: they can be moved in the list and deleted from the communicator’s memory in iOS style.

After turning on the communicator, the owner immediately gets access to widgets of several social networks (VKontakte and Odnoklassniki), can read the Twitter feed and leave his messages.

The list of other pre-installed applications is as follows: Agent Mail.ru, client Facebook, a program for reading electronic books FBReader.

LG Optimus Sol became the first LG communicator to be equipped with a new type of display - Ultra AMOLED. There are few details about their characteristics, with the main ones coming from the company itself; This type of display can rightfully be considered the main rival of Samsung Super AMOLED screens in the battle for the eyes, hearts and pockets of mobile device buyers.

The AMOLED display consists of luminous dots - organic light-emitting diodes, thereby eliminating the need for a separate backlight, and energy is consumed more economically. The matrix is ​​combined with a capacitive sensor with support for multiple touches. The top of the screen is covered with protective glass.

A visual inspection of the display showed that the Ultra AMOLED matrix is ​​made using technology similar to PenTile, when the LEDs responsible for displaying one of the three basic colors are arranged in a special way, with a predominance of green subpixels. In this way, the LG Optimus Sol display is reminiscent of the matrix of the Samsung Galaxy S communicator. If you look closely at the picture on the screen, it looks somewhat unusual: the contrasting text seems a little blurry, as well as the boundaries of the shapes. However, to this effect you quickly get used to it, and it ceases to be noticeable.

In describing its displays, LG notes their high brightness and high-quality color rendition. The matrix is ​​really distinguished by its brightness (at the maximum level your eyes begin to hurt) and rich pictures.

Working with the screen did not cause any complaints; there were no delays in the sensor response. The image on the display is beyond praise, the brightness is more than sufficient - such a screen fully lives up to the name of the communicator.

Both speakers of the LG Optimus Sol do their job well - voice acting telephone conversations and playback of various signals. The volume of the speakers is changed both in software and in hardware - using a dedicated key on the left side of the device.

The communicator arrived at the editorial office without a headset, so nothing definite can be said about its appearance and quality. However, it (or any other headphones) is required for the built-in FM radio to work. The appearance of the radio control program is laconic. You can quickly search for a station in manual or automatic modes, and then add the frequency to the communicator's memory.

The set of wireless communication modules in communicators of all price ranges was finally established in 2011 and does not undergo changes. For comfortable operation of the camera, a separate control key is greatly lacking. You can activate shooting from the program menu of the communicator; launching the camera and starting the program takes one second. The autofocus system works very quickly, capturing a photo almost immediately after touching the shoot button. The LG Optimus Sol does not have any flash or backlight system.

The interface of the camera control program is in many ways similar to the standard analogue built into the Android system. Along the right edge of the window are the main camera controls: capturing a frame, changing the shooting mode from photo to video, photo thumbnails. On the left are the settings icons: switching between cameras, shooting resolution, white balance, exposure compensation, shooting scenes and the call button additional menu settings. It, in turn, contains the following items: focusing system, ISO sensitivity, white balance, color effects, timer and linking images to geographic coordinates.

The quality of pictures taken using the camera built into the LG Optimus Sol is good, quite consistent with the standards of modern communicators. Examples of photographs can be found below, and a video is also available for viewing.

Battery life

The capacity of the standard battery of the LG Optimus Sol communicator is 1500 mAh - this value is slightly higher than the average among the tested communicators (1200 mAh).

As usual, several tests were carried out on the mobile computer for battery life. In the first of them, the device worked in e-book reading mode and lasted 15 hours. In the next test, the communicator played music with the screen turned off - it managed to do this for almost 39 hours. In the last test, the mobile computer used up the battery power to the maximum, and its charge was exhausted in 8.5 hours. The performance of the LG Optimus Sol in terms of battery life is so outstanding that the communicator is aiming for one of the first places in the ranking. In the last two tests, the mobile computer lasted twice as long as most of its peers; The result in the test with maximum load looks especially impressive.

High results are probably due to many components of the communicator: a capacious battery, an OLED display, a balanced processor and an optimized version of the operating system. As it were, long work battery power is one of the main advantages of the LG Optimus Sol.

Performance

The Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon chipset installed in the LG Optimus Sol has one main ARMv7 Scorpion core, which operates at 1 GHz. The communicator also has 512 MB of RAM on board. These characteristics allow us to classify the new product as a middle class mobile computer.

Judging by the points scored, the graphics subsystem of the new product looks very good: LG Optimus Sol received second place, beating even more powerful rivals. In processor performance tests, the performance is not so outstanding, but it also allowed the new product to outperform the popular first-generation Samsung Galaxy S. The Quadrant Standard test gave a result of 1408 points, which also indicates decent performance of the communicator in 3D applications.

Overall, the LG Optimus Sol performed very well; the communicator's performance is quite sufficient for everyday work and entertainment. Subjectively, working with the device is pleasant - there are no delays or “slowdowns” of either the operating system itself or programs.

Conclusions

LG Optimus Sol or Samsung Galaxy S? The choice is not the most obvious or simple. LG developers managed to create a balanced, powerful, productive device with a very attractive price. Of course, we should note the wonderful display and excellent battery life.

The new product has every chance of becoming a favorite in the mid-price segment of communicators. The only drawback of the LG Optimus Sol is its too simple design, body materials, and inexpressive design. But all this is more than offset by the high-quality picture on the screen. Manufacturers from Korea seem to have conspired to “pack” wonderful hardware and displays into gray (literally and figuratively) cases.

However, an affordable communicator with an AMOLED display can be purchased not only in black, but also in white, as well as “titanium” design. It is gratifying that with the advent of LG Optimus Sol, high-quality displays have entered the middle segment of the market, and the choice of communicators has become wider.
