The Kingston SSDNow UV400 came to us for testing in a small blister with a cardboard backing on which the name of the drive and its capacity are printed. On the reverse side there is only an advertising description without technical specifications. There are no accessories included.

Appearance of the device and its features

Unpainted aluminum is used as the main body material. Also on the front side you can see the Kingston logo and four screws for disassembling the case, one of which is covered with a warranty sticker. If you still want to disassemble the Kingston SSDNow UV400, then you will need a non-standard screwdriver with a Torx Tamper Resistant head.

Looking at the back of the case, you can find a sticker with additional technical data: serial number, warranty code, warning about proper handling, as well as logos of passed certifications. Along the edges there are four mounting holes for installing the drive into an adapter for a 3.5-inch bay.

The case thickness is only 7 mm. This will allow you to easily install it even in an ultra-thin laptop. On the side there are the necessary holes for fixing the disk in the corresponding compartment.

Kingston SSDNow UV400 features a SATA 6Gb/s port for optimal bandwidth. Of course, it is compatible with previous versions of this interface, but in this case the speed indicators will be noticeably lower.

The controller is a four-channel Marvell 88SS1074 chip, which supports the following technologies:

  • NCQ (native command queuing) - hardware installation of command queuing, which allows you to optimize the performance of the drive;
  • S.M.A.R.T. (self-monitoring, analysis and reporting technology) - a monitoring system that monitors the condition of the drive, thanks to which it is possible to predict the time of its failure;
  • TRIM allows you to directly delete data stored in flash memory and immediately free up unused space (free blocks) for use by the system for recording information.

The sixteen 15nm TLC memory chips labeled “Kingston FT16B08UCT1-0F” are located on both sides of the PCB. The volume of each of them is 16 GB, which gives a total of 256 GB shared memory. Accordingly, 240 GB is available to the user, and 16 GB is used for operating system algorithms.

The Nanya NT5CC128M16FP-DI 2 Gbit DDR3 RAM chip acts as a buffer.

The SSD comes formatted in the NTFS file system. Its effective capacity is 240 GB or 223 GiB.

After a 15-minute continuous recording test, the drive heated up to 34 - 35°C, which is a good result.

As we remember, the manufacturer claims read and write speeds in the ATTO Disk Benchmark program at 550 and 490 MB/s, respectively. As for CrystalDiskMark, we got even more good results: 561 and 511 MB/s for read and write respectively.

The AS SSD Benchmark, which, like CrystalDiskMark, evaluates work with incompressible data, showed 490.20 and 455.80 MB/s, respectively, which is slightly lower than the stated characteristics.

As you can see, in HD Tune Pro 5.60 the tested model shows very good results in read speed (444.2 MB/s), but at the same time confidently takes last place in write speed with a result of 280.2 MB/s. It is quite possible that this is the result of incorrect operation of the benchmark itself, since in other tests we did not observe such a significant drop in performance. Moreover, Futuremark PCMark’05, CrystalMark 0.9 and Intel NAS PT 1.7.1 rated the Kingston SSDNow UV400 quite highly, ensuring its place in the top three among the models presented in the comparison. As for access time and CPU load, the drive has no problems with these parameters.

Conclusions

Storage KingstonSSDNow UV400 (SUV400S37/240G) is one of the most affordable on the market. It also stands out nicely stylish design and three configuration options, which will allow you to save on unnecessary accessories by purchasing the OEM version without packaging, or, conversely, get a complete set if you need an external pocket and a number of adapters.

Another advantage is the case thickness of 7 mm, which will allow the Kingston SSDNow UV400 to be installed in ultrabooks. The variety of available modifications in terms of volume is even more captivating: options from 120 to 480 GB are currently available, and a 960 GB version will appear in August.

As for the operating speed, the manufacturer's stated figures of 550 and 490 MB/s for reading and writing compressed data were obtained without problems in the CrystalDiskMark test. Most other benchmarks also confirmed good level performance of the new product: in the Intel NAS PT 1.71, Futuremark PCMark’05 and CrystalMark 0.9 tests, it confidently entered the top three.

Also, do not forget that the Kingston SSDNow UV400 uses TLC memory chips, which have a shorter service life than MLC. In particular, the total volume of recorded data (TBW) for this model is 100 TB. This is approximately equivalent to recording 91 GB per day for 3 years or 54 GB per day for 5 years. If you do not plan to use the new product so intensively in your system, then you should not worry too much. By the way, Kingston deserves special praise for providing detailed specifications of its products in general and this SSD in particular, since many other manufacturers do not want to disclose, for example, the TBW indicator for their models.

As a result, Kingston SSDNow UV400 is a good and relatively affordable representative of its price category. It will be an excellent replacement for a slow HDD, allowing you to significantly increase the performance of your computer as a whole.

Software

  • S.M.A.R.T.- the log shows the status of the hard drive based on monitoring of key parameters. Also, using this table, the remaining resource is calculated.


  • Security- Secure Erase function, which guarantees complete clearing of information from memory without the possibility of its recovery.
  • Events- device event log.

Testing

To prepare the drive for testing, you should create a partition; for this we will use the EASEUS utility.

The leveling process should then be performed if this has not been done previously. Let's use the Paragon Alignment Tool for this.

To start, S.M.A.R.T. from the CrystalDiskInfo plate, the data indicates support for NCQ and TRIM. The drive is completely new, as evidenced by the total operating time.

AS SSD Benchmark - in addition to the main test, it also includes Copy Benchmark and Compression Benchmark.

Thanks to the presence of the Silicon Motion controller, the speed of the device remains constant and does not depend on the possibility of data compression, which is confirmed in the Compression Benchmark test.

Copy Benchmark shows the time spent copying data under various operating scenarios.

ATTO Disk Benchmark - the results obtained sometimes exceed those indicated on the Kingston website 550 MB/s for reading and 490 MB/s for writing. Most manufacturers rely on ATTO DISK Benchmark readings due to the fact that this test uses well-compressed data, which allows them to compensate for the drop in speed parameters in the case of poorly compressed data.

CrystalDiskMark - based on the results, it should be noted that the speed is constant regardless of the type of data used (poorly/well compressed).

To increase the information content, I will present the results from the HD Tune Pro test package; testing took place when the drive was full.



Conclusion

Kingston UV400 240GB (SUV400S37240G) is an inexpensive but powerful solution that is perfect for a gaming build or laptop. During testing, no significant negative aspects were recorded. Some may note that using TLC type memory is not the most positive thing. However, this move is very typical for the budget segment, and if you do not plan to record large amounts of data daily, then the resource will last you a long time. The advantages include design, performance, stable operation with any type of data, noiselessness, low consumption, support for proprietary software and a warranty period of 36 months.
