Liv 52- combined herbal preparation. It has hepatoprotective, antitoxic, anti-inflammatory, choleretic, antioxidant, antianorexic effects. Helps improve the process of digestion and absorption of food.

The hepatoprotective effect of Liv 52 is due to the antioxidant and membrane-stabilizing properties of its constituent components. The drug increases the level of endogenous tocopherols in hepatocytes and the level of cytochrome P450. Liv 52 stimulates the biosynthesis of proteins and phospholipids. Promotes the restoration of hepatocytes, reduces degenerative, fatty and fibrotic changes, enhances intracellular metabolism.

The drug regulates the level of plasma proteins in the blood, normalizing the albumin/globulin ratio. Provides normalization of the level of plasma transaminases, cholesterol, triglycerides, reducing the manifestations of dyslipidemia. Reduces bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase levels. Increases the liver's ability to store glycogen.

Improves the colloidal properties of bile, prevents the formation of gallstones. Improves the contractile function of the gallbladder.

Stimulates hematopoiesis.

In case of alcoholic liver damage, the drug reduces the level of ethanol in the blood and urine; increases the activity of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, which helps reduce the level of acetaldehyde; prevents the binding of acetaldehyde to cell proteins and accelerates its elimination. By preventing the damaging effect of acetaldehyde on hepatocytes, the drug reduces the risk of developing a “hangover” syndrome.

What does Liv-52 help with? As a hepatoprotector, the drug protects hepatocytes from damage and promotes their active regeneration. In addition, Liv-52 increases the activity of the biosynthetic function of liver cells, inhibits the oxidation of lipid components, protecting cell membranes from the negative effects of oxidation products on them. The action of the drug is also aimed at binding toxins and other harmful substances that have entered the body and negatively affect the functions of hepatocytes. The drug Liv-52 successfully combats congestion in the biliary tract, eliminating dyskinesia and normalizing the digestive process, increasing the patient's appetite. To the above properties of the drug you can also add choleretic, antioxidant and mild diuretic effects.

Main indications for use of Liv-52:

Reviews from experts

It should be noted that reviews of Liv-52 are quite contradictory. A number of specialists highly appreciate the therapeutic properties of this drug, while other hepatologists are skeptical about it. There is information in the medical literature that the properties of Liv-52 declared by the manufacturer do not correspond to reality. If clinical trials of the drug for the treatment of viral hepatitis demonstrated a decrease in bilirubin levels and a slight loss of body weight in patients, then during the treatment of alcoholic hepatitis the effect of using Liv-52 was almost equal to placebo. In addition, the intoxication indicator of the drug was also not noted.

Experts also refer to some cases of the use of Liv-52 in acute pathological conditions of the liver, when there was a significant deterioration in the patient’s condition. The use of the drug for liver failure had no effect on the mortality rate of patients, and in some cases even worsened it.

Taking into account all of the above, it is advisable before using Liv-52 to consult with your doctor and strictly follow his recommendations.

Liv 52 is a plant-based drug that belongs to the group of hepatoprotectors. The main indication for its use is liver disease. The medicine has gained particular popularity as a means of helping to relieve hangover syndrome. Can Liv 52 be taken with alcohol?

Features of the composition

To understand how a medicine affects the body, you should carefully familiarize yourself with its constituent components. The active substances are:

  • herbaceous caper;
  • chicory;
  • hay leaves;
  • yarrow;
  • nightshade;
  • cassia occidentalis;
  • terminalia;
  • iron oxide.

Before becoming part of the drug composition, all components are processed, as a result of which microdoses of active compounds are formed. A characteristic feature of such microdoses is the possibility of adverse reactions.

The drug contains components that are harmful to the liver

Many patients are confused by the content of components such as hay, nightshade and caperberry in the drug. They are popularly known for their harmful effects on the liver. In addition, the composition includes chicory and yarrow, known for their choleretic effect. Terminalia also belongs to the choleretic substances, but it has an antioxidant function. When all these substances enter the body in small doses, they activate protective functions, namely, they stabilize cell membranes, block apoptosis and eliminate active radicals.

Long-term use increases protein production. This determines the anabolic effect of the drug. That is, during treatment, significantly more proteins are produced than those that undergo breakdown. This can be determined even by the patient’s appearance. He has an increase in muscle mass.

How the drug works

The medicine is a combination remedy due to the inclusion of a large number of plant components. One of the main components is capers, enriched with the following substances:

Herbaceous capers have the following properties:

  • anesthetic;
  • diuretic;
  • hepatostimulating;
  • hepatoprotective;
  • increase appetite.

Western Cassia has choleretic, laxative, and antitoxic properties. It promotes the normal discharge of bile. The plant has a tonic effect on the gastrointestinal tract.

Terminalia is known for its diuretic properties. Yarrow is enriched with vitamin K, essential oils, and tannins. The plant helps to enlarge the bile ducts, which ensures the correct process of bile secretion. At the same time, there is no pain in the intestinal area, due to the fact that the plant has a tonic effect. These properties of the drug allow it to be used in the following cases:

  • peptic ulcer;
  • gastritis;
  • flatulence;
  • kidney diseases;
  • liver dysfunction;
  • ulcerative colitis.

Iron oxide ensures intensification of the circulatory system.

Alcohol addiction

Taking the drug stimulates improvement in the digestive system. Patients experience a decrease in the degradation of cell membranes and an increase in the concentration of antioxidants.

The antitoxic property plays a special role in chronic alcoholism. Prevents lipids from entering liver tissue. This vital organ acquires full protection from possible destruction in the future.
Correct use of the medicine leads to an increase in protein and restores liver functionality.

The combination of medicinal components is selected in such a way that the drug is able to act comprehensively. If a person often associates with alcohol, then taking this medicine is a direct indication for him.

Indications for use

Liv 52 can be used in treatment only if prescribed by a specialist. Despite the fact that the product consists almost entirely of plant components, it is necessary to exclude possible intolerance by the body. In this way, it will be possible to avoid the occurrence of a negative reaction to taking the medicine. The main indications for prescription are the following diseases:

  1. Hepatitis with different forms of the disease.
  2. Treatment and prevention of liver function. Lesions associated with ingestion of chemical irritants.
  3. . Such cases include alcohol poisoning.
  4. Cirrhosis of the liver.
  5. Changes in the structure of the liver preceding the development of cirrhosis.
  6. Pathological exhaustion, up to anorexia.
  7. Hypoproteinemia.
  8. Fatty hepatosis.
  9. Sharp weight loss.
  10. Rehabilitation therapy after surgery.
  11. Rehabilitation after a course of chemotherapy.
  12. Cholecystitis.
  13. Biliary dyskinesia.

The following cases should be noted as contraindications:

  1. Hypersensitivity to individual components of the drug.
  2. Acute forms of gastrointestinal diseases (allowed, but with extreme caution).
  3. Pregnancy period.
  4. Lactation.

Combination of the drug with alcohol intake

This remedy is often used as a drug to relieve hangover syndrome. True, there has been little research on this topic in humans. But experiments carried out on animals show that during alcohol intoxication of the body, Liv 52 helps to reduce the activity of enzymes that destroy the liver. Thanks to this, the liver ceases to experience constant stress, and glutathione reserves are preserved and maintained. Thus, the drug plays a protective role in the oxidative process from alcohol. That is, we can conclude that there is compatibility between Liv 52 and alcohol.

All studies conducted speak exclusively of the positive effects of the drug. All patients note a significant improvement in their well-being, and severe hangover symptoms are suppressed. Such indicators also apply to those people who often drink alcohol.

If there are no contraindications for taking the drug, then it can be used in complex treatment, combined with other medications. If the therapeutic effect of the drug for hangover syndrome is insignificant, treatment can be supplemented with similar drugs.

The drug Liv 52 helps with alcohol poisoning

How does the drug affect alcohol poisoning?

The medicine has a large number of positive properties, which actively manifest themselves when relieving poisoning as a result of regular intake of alcohol. How does the drug affect the body when the body is poisoned?

Possible consequences

If a person has an individual intolerance to certain components of the drug, and he does not suspect it, then by taking the medicine, he can provoke allergic reactions, including severe attacks of suffocation. In addition, the digestive system and organs of the gastrointestinal tract will suffer. At the first suspicion of an adverse reaction of the body, you should immediately stop using the drug and contact a specialist for advice on replacing the medication.

There are cases where patients diagnosed with hepatitis develop epidermal necrolysis. The course of the disease can take different forms, but the most dangerous is if the symptoms are acute and difficult to treat.

Since the medication is contraindicated for use during pregnancy and lactation, there is no data on the use of the drug in the treatment of pregnant women. During this period of life, it is better to avoid this medication. If there is nothing to replace it with, and Liv 52 is the only salvation, the use of the drug is allowed with a change in dosage and under the strict supervision of the treating specialist.

Long-term use of the drug or its accidental overdose does not in any way affect the appearance of the effect of toxic poisoning. But this does not mean that it is permissible to allow unauthorized deviations from the medication regimen. To avoid side effects and serious consequences, you should strictly follow the instructions given by the doctor.

If the medicine is taken simultaneously with Ibuprofen, there is a noticeable decrease in the concentration of the latter.

Experts' opinion

Numerous reviews from doctors are quite contradictory. Some of them note the positive properties of the drug, while others are convinced of its low effectiveness. They cite its detrimental effects on the liver in some known treatment cases. During drug therapy with Liv 52, the condition of the liver worsened. But these are rather isolated cases, and such effects could have been facilitated by intolerance to the components of the drug, which was not known to doctors and patients.

High efficiency in relieving hangover syndrome and eliminating intoxication of the body has been proven many times. There is a rapid recovery of the patient's strength, and the structure of the liver improves.

Briefly: Liv-52 is a herbal remedy that has been used to treat hepatitis since the mid-20th century. Now the drug is positioned as a choleretic agent. The latest studies conducted according to the canons of evidence-based medicine do not find confirmation of the effectiveness of the drug (including for the treatment of alcoholic liver disease). But there may be side effects, so do not take Liv-52 without a doctor's recommendation.

Use of Liv-52 in the past and now

Liv-52 is a drug well known to domestic consumers. In the modern world, it was proposed for the treatment of viral hepatitis in 1955. The history of the use of Liv-52 in Soviet and then Russian practice in the treatment of diseases accompanied by liver damage goes back at least 40 years. In the United States, the drug is prohibited from being sold as a medicine.

On the other hand, the latest studies conducted according to the canons of evidence-based medicine do not find confirmation of the effectiveness of the drug and sometimes even demonstrate its danger.

Since its invention, the drug has undergone a kind of rebranding: if initially in the instructions for use Liv-52 was positioned as a classic hepatoprotector capable of completely or almost completely restoring damaged liver tissue, now it is spoken of mainly as a choleretic drug. Apparently, this is due to the complex composition of the drug and poor knowledge of its mechanism of action, the difficulty of conducting and interpreting the results of clinical trials. However, in this respect, it is no different from other hepatoprotectors of plant origin: in order to understand exactly how and what exactly they help with, people still have to study and research them.

We study the instructions for Liv-52. Composition and effect of the drug

In the instructions for Liv-52, the manufacturer calls the main components:

  • caper,
  • chicory,
  • iron oxide
  • nightshade,
  • yarrow,
  • terminalia
  • and senna (western cassia).

The main components enter the preparation after steaming the extract of about a dozen other plants. But such processing leads to the appearance of microdoses of other active substances of these plants along with the main components (the main difference between the action of microdoses and regular doses should be considered the possibility of the opposite effect).

When assessing the composition, attention is drawn to the presence of:

  • components toxic to the liver (nightshade, senna and caperberry)
  • and choleretic components (yarrow and chicory).

Terminalia, depending on the dose, can act as both a choleretic and an antioxidant agent. According to the advertisement, the intake of liver poisons in small doses simultaneously with antioxidants leads to the body actively engaging in protective reactions, including membrane stabilization, blocking apoptosis (programmed cell death) and neutralization of active radicals.

Subsequently, protein synthesis reactions in hepatocytes intensify, which determines the popularly known anabolic effect of Liv-52. This means that the synthesis of substances in the body begins to prevail over decay. This is primarily noticeable by weight gain, including due to muscle tissue and bones.

Will the liver protect against alcohol?

For readers of our site, the effect of the drug when drinking alcohol should be especially interesting. Separate experiments on animals have shown that in case of alcoholic liver damage, the use of Liv-52 can prevent the alcohol-induced increase in the activity of the enzymes gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP) and superoxide dismutase (the activity of these enzymes increases with the destruction of working liver cells - hepatocytes).

This means that the load on the mechanisms that prevent the action of active radicals is reduced. And this, in turn, helps maintain glutathione reserves and suppress lipid peroxidation (the building material of cell membranes) in the liver and protect against oxidative stress.

However, there are no high-quality human studies confirming the benefits of Liv-52 in this case.

Is there any benefit for alcoholic liver disease?

Whether a person gets better or not depends on Liv-52. This is evidenced by the results of a study conducted by Sri Lankan scientists in 1998-1999: H. A. de Silva, P. A. M. Saparamadu, M. I. Tabrev and others.

The experiment involved 80 patients with alcoholic liver disease. Half of them were prescribed to take three Liv-52 tablets twice a day for 6 months. The other half of the patients (the control group) were assigned to take placebo in exactly the same order. The patients did not know which of them took Liv-52 and which took placebo.

Participants in the experiment underwent blood tests and liver function tests three times: at the very beginning, after a month and after 6 months of therapy. Age, amount of alcohol consumed and initial liver condition were approximately the same.

Scientists found that there was no significant difference either in the tests or in the well-being of the patients, regardless of whether they took Liv-52 or not. There were no side effects from the drug either. From this study, it can be concluded that the drug is ineffective for the treatment of alcoholic liver disease.

Is the drug safe?

A group of European scientists conducted a study in 1997, the results of which were not encouraging. They treated half of their patients with alcoholic hepatitis with the drug Liv-52 (given 1200 mg), and the remaining patients were given a placebo. By the end of the experiment, among those who received the placebo, 86% of patients remained alive. And among those receiving Liv-52 - only 74%.

The situation was even worse with the treatment of hepatitis C. During treatment, 22 of 23 patients receiving Liv-52 died. All of these cases were associated with liver failure or bleeding. While in the control group (who did not receive Liv-52), fewer people died: 3 out of 11.

Liv-52 is, first of all, a choleretic drug. About how to overcome a hangover with the help of choleretic drugs, whether you can drink alcohol if you have problems with bile flow, and what to do if you vomit bile during a hangover - about all this.

This drug helped me. I had to take it while taking oral contraceptives. OK, I took it for quite a long time and even a little pigmentation appeared. Then I went to the doctor to find out what the reason was and it turned out that this was an OK effect, but Liv 52 corrected the situation, the liver symptoms went away.

My husband, having suffered hemolytic hepatitis, restored his liver with Liv 52, using it daily after illness for 2 years, and now 2 times a year. In the ward, the guys he was with had already died of cirrhosis, some after a year, some after 3 years, later the rest died, his liver was in excellent condition. He no longer trusts any drugs like him. And she also loves Chinese Cordyceps.
