Answers:

Sometimes people want not to be recognized, neither by neighbors nor strangers. Previously, in the Czech Republic there was a custom according to which on the day of Maslenitsa, the townspeople, getting up before dawn, went to the woodworker for carnival masks. Who hasn't wanted to try on a beautiful wooden hood! Whoever did not come to the master’s house that day received a wonderful vestment. But no matter how hard this humble worker tried, none of his work survived until the next holiday, because everything burned in a huge fire. The master was offended by this tradition more than once, but he never complained to anyone because he gave people joy.

Unknown Nikandros

(Not and neither with different parts of speech)

In a small ancient Greek town there lived a certain boy named Nikandros. His childhood was very difficult and far from happy. An unloved child in the family, Nikandros often lacked sleep and was malnourished. Often, without finishing his breakfast, he had to run early in the morning to his stepfather’s shop and there for several hours he would casually smile at customers, without touching either bread or sugar.

An unkind atmosphere reigned in the shop; it was not the truth that dominated there, but deception. The stepfather was by no means disinterested and very dishonest. Despite the fact that his stepfather could not do without an assistant, he underestimated Nikandros and did not trust him. Often, without looking the boy in the eyes, the stepfather said unflattering words about his unyielding stepson. Nikandros had no one to rely on and nowhere to wait for help.

However, the boy liked to trade. With genuine sincerity, as if nothing had happened, he gave advice to strangers, delved into the ongoing conclusion of transactions and collected debts from people who did not pay for purchases on time.

It cannot be said that Nikandros simply did not like his stepfather; he hated everything about him: his lifeless, expressionless face, his unkind eyes, his unpleasant voice.

One day Nikandros did not pay attention and, turning awkwardly, broke an amphora that was not properly secured. Having no doubt that he would be in trouble, the boy, without waiting for the evening, ran away from home.

After some time, the boy, who was neither washed nor fed, was picked up by a rich Greek. He saw that although Nikandros was not properly trained, he had an extraordinary mind and remarkable abilities. The Greek decided to take up the boy's education.

Ten years later, Nikandros unexpectedly became a famous merchant. What places has he visited! Wherever he appeared, he was greeted with honors. His word was not only strong, but also practical. “None other than Nikandros ordered this,” they said about him. No one else had such unquestioned authority.

This is how the life of this unknown boy turned out so unexpectedly and happily.

Guys, we put our soul into the site. Thank you for that
that you are discovering this beauty. Thanks for the inspiration and goosebumps.
Join us on Facebook And VKontakte

We all try to protect our boundaries and don't want to get close to people who don't respect them. But what if, for those around us, such people are ourselves? Are you confident that you correctly understand the signals of others and respect their personal space? We often misjudge the degree of intimacy, which is why we ask awkward questions to colleagues or give unsolicited advice to loved ones.

We are in website collected situations in which behavior depends on the degree of closeness with the interlocutor. These examples will help you correctly build boundaries with others so that communication brings mutual benefit and pleasure.

1. Personal and awkward questions

If you are sitting in a cafe with a close friend and discussing her recent marriage, then the question “Are you going to give birth?” quite appropriate. If a colleague shows her wedding photos and you ask a similar question, be prepared for the fact that she will want to increase her distance from you. You don’t know if she plans to have children or if she can even have them. Depending on her situation, the question may make her angry or upset.

But he is unlikely to be pleased with such care. People don't want to discuss their health problems, especially obvious ones. If you are in a hurry to go to the doctor for your mother or husband, who are postponing the necessary visit, then you care about their health, in all other cases, you are minding your own business.

Advice: Avoid questions regarding a person's appearance and health. If you are interested in a topic, do not ask directly, but start from afar. If a person does not support the topic, then you should not develop it.

2. Touch

If you are used to walking arm-in-arm or touching people during a conversation, then be prepared for different reactions: some will react to this normally, while others may find it unpleasant.

Why do we feel this way about touch? It's all about the degree of rigidity of boundaries. Some people have softer boundaries - such people are calmer about tactile contacts. But for some, tactility is only appropriate with those closest to you. And there are people who don’t like touch at all.

In addition, we have a comfortable communication zone. For acquaintances and colleagues, this is approximately 1–1.5 m. If you stand closer, the person may have a desire to move away. And if you constantly violate his comfort zone and accompany this with touches, he will probably soon completely stop wanting to communicate with you.

Advice: Ask before you touch or stand too close to someone. This way the person will have the opportunity to maintain a comfortable distance and not seem rude.

3. Gifts

It is believed that receiving gifts is always pleasant. In fact, the degree of pleasure depends on the occasion, the giver, and the gift itself. Imagine that on the eve of the birthday of a girl with whom you recently broke up, you became emotional, remembered all the good things and decided to send her flowers. You may appear generous and considerate to yourself.

But such an unexpected gift can confuse and anger a girl. She will decide that you need something from her and will feel obligated. And it’s easy to explain this from a psychological point of view: we are comfortable communicating with each other on equal terms, not being indebted to ourselves and not expecting something from others. Then communication flows freely and unobtrusively.

Inappropriate gifts are an invasion of a person’s personal boundaries. You are trying to get closer, without the consent of the person himself. And you put him in an awkward position, because the gift implies a so-called symmetrical response.

Advice: The price of the gift should correspond to the degree of intimacy with the person. Don't give people something just to please them. And don't feel obligated to give you anything in return.

4. Detailed stories about yourself and your feelings

We all love to talk about ourselves. But not everyone likes to hear about us. Close people, like just acquaintances, are often not really delighted with our “self-presentations”, but are forced to listen so as not to offend us.

How can you share your feelings and stories without being intrusive? First, they must be relevant to the topic of the conversation. Secondly, your story should be useful or interesting to the interlocutor.

Third, watch the reactions. If the person nods and says “yeah” to your long-winded monologues, it’s time to drop the subject and talk about something else.

Advice: Try to put yourself in the person’s shoes and talk about yourself in a way that would be interesting to another. And sometimes people just want to be listened to and not insert comments about themselves - this is a useful skill to master for anyone who wants to become a pleasant conversationalist.

We all enjoy sharing our experiences. Why, instead of being grateful for the advice, do others feel irritated and do not want to communicate with us?

Because with this behavior we are trying to elevate ourselves in the eyes of our interlocutor. After all, we do not undertake to solve the problem ourselves, but tell others how to do it. This is how we build a hierarchy in which we place the interlocutor below ourselves. If he does not consider us a real authority, he will consider us an upstart and, most likely, will no longer want to deal with us.

All advice must be upon request only. The exception is people who are below us in the real hierarchy. For example, you can advise your subordinate at work how to better cope with the task. However, if you start telling him how to communicate with girls correctly, you will only see aggression and irritation in response. In this matter, a person may not consider you an authority.

Advice: Ask the person if they need help before you give advice. Or directly suggest: “Can I help you?” After the other party agrees, your advice will be received adequately.

6. Evaluation and praise

Imagine that you have just completed a cool project at work and received a promotion. The director pats you on the shoulder and says you’re doing great. You're flattered. And if in this situation we change the director to your subordinate? You will most likely feel awkward, irritated, or angry.

We are ready to accept assessments, as well as advice, only from those whom we consider an authority. Your professionalism is several times higher than that of your subordinate. And when he praises you in a fatherly way and pats you on the shoulder, it looks stupid.

Unfortunately, we ourselves do not always understand when our assessment is truly appropriate. And we look just as stupid when we praise our friends for going to the gym, although we ourselves need it more than they do, or we say “Yes, not bad” in response to the news about a colleague’s salary increase, although we ourselves receive much less.

Advice: To avoid annoying people, rate them only upon request. Or turn the appreciation into a compliment. Instead of “Not bad” when you hear news of a promotion, say “Great, I’m happy for you.” Avoid negative evaluations unless you are directly asked to give your opinion.

7. Requests

We get pleasure when we do something for others. At such moments we feel strong and needed. But this effect is achieved only when we do something of our own free will, and not in response to a request.

Almost everyone understands that big requests are burdensome for others. But often we stress people out with all sorts of little things, for example, asking them to borrow a couple of hundred for lunch because they forgot their wallet, to give them a call when they forgot their phone, or to give them a ride home because it’s on the way. Over time, all this accumulates in memory, and in the eyes of a person we turn into a tiresome beggar.

Dealing with this problem is simple: you need to stop asking. Even if your colleague drives past your house every day, if he doesn’t invite you to go for a ride, it means he wants to go alone or with someone else. And you are quite capable of getting home without his help.

Advice: Ask others for something only as a last resort. And try to do something for others yourself. This will make them more loyal and you happier.

Maintaining boundaries and being tactful is an art that we greatly value in those around us. And if we master it ourselves, then relationships with people will develop much better. Have you ever had difficulty perceiving other people's boundaries?
