Apron - types and features

According to their purpose, they can be kitchen, school, or special. Applique, embroidery, facing, and braid can be used as finishing. According to the type of cut they are divided into:

  • one-piece (the lower and upper parts are one piece);
  • with bib;
  • on the belt.

For many nations, the apron is part of the national costume and is decorated with braid, embroidery, ribbons, and hemstitching. A variation of it is the apron; it does not have a bib and is a rectangle of fabric with a belt attached to it.

This is interesting. At first only men wore them. Richly decorated patterns were worn by noble persons; simpler aprons were intended for servants. Over time, this item of clothing changed and even became part of the gymnasium uniform.

In Russia, as in all European countries, an apron is an important part of the national costume

We sew an apron with our own hands step by step

Preparing a pattern for cutting involves drawing design and shaped lines. On the drawing you must indicate the amount of allowances, sign the middle of the apron, the fold line, indicate all the parts and their quantity.

Everything is like mom's!

Pattern using patchwork technique

Taking measurements and drawing a drawing

Measurements are taken on the figure of a person dressed in light, tight-fitting underwear. When taking measurements, you need to stand straight and without tension, with your arms down, while a thin belt is tied at your waist.

The correctness of the drawing depends on how accurately the measurements are taken.

Measurements of half girths, as well as the distance between centers, are recorded in half size.

The main lines needed to construct the pattern run along the waist and hips. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the semi-hip circumference (SHC) and the semi-waist circumference (SW). Additionally, you need to decide on the height of the upper part of the bib (TG) and the length of the lower part of the apron (TN). TG is measured from the waist to the chest line. TN is measured from the waist to the knees.

The POT measurement is needed to calculate the length of the belt, POB is needed to determine the width of the apron. The width of the bib is determined at chest level.

  1. Draw a vertical line on graph paper - this will be the line of the middle of the product and the fold line.
  2. Mark an arbitrary point T on this line (slightly above the middle of the sheet). Up from this point, set the distance TG, down from point T, measure the distance TN.
  3. From points G, T and H to the right, draw horizontal center lines - the line of the chest, waist and bottom.
  4. Set aside segment GG1 (it is equal to half the width of the bib).
  5. TT1=POB/2+6. From point T1, draw a vertical axis until it intersects with the bottom line. The intersection point will be H1.
  6. From point G1, lower the vertical axis until it intersects with the waist line, move 4-5 cm to the right from the intersection point and mark point T2.
  7. From point T2, draw a vertical line down and mark the segment T2K=6 cm. Distance KK1=KK2=18 cm.
  8. Outline it with a thick line.
  9. To construct the straps, draw a rectangular strip of 4*45 cm. The length of the belt is (POT*2)+30 cm, its width is 6 cm.

Cutting and preparing parts for processing

Part numbers are indicated on the drawing, and the lobe and fold lines are indicated. The direction of the grain should be parallel to the edge of the fabric. If the pattern has undercuts, they are cut out. Since cotton and linen materials shrink after washing, the fabric must be washed, dried and ironed using a damp iron. All these operations are called preparation for cutting.

Important. If the pattern consists of several elements, the direction of the pattern is also taken into account.

It is important to choose the right fabric

The allowances must be the same size, then when combining the cuts of the cut parts, the seam lines coincide. Allowances are marked using a measuring tape and chalk. For the bottom of the product, an allowance of 4 cm is left, for the remaining cuts - 1.5 cm. The pattern details are pinned on the wrong side and cut out.

Sewing and finishing

The fabric for home “workwear” must be durable, since it will have to be washed often. Linen, cotton and denim are all fine.

The amount of fabric required is calculated based on the length of the product (equal to the length of the lower part and the length of the bib). Don't forget to add 4cm for allowances.

All details are swept away, after which a fitting is required. If there are no defects, all parts are sewn together using a sewing machine.

Children's apron - patterns for every taste

Does drawing a drawing seem too long and tedious? We offer three ideas on how to sew an apron easily and simply.

Patchwork

Shredded apron

  • You can create an unusual apron from colorful scraps. Here you don’t need a pattern for a children’s apron; for sewing you need to cut out multi-colored squares from fabric.
  • First you need to decide on the size of the components. You can sew a large apron from squares with a side of 10 cm. For a children's apron, smaller patches are suitable (or the same size, but then there will be fewer of them in each row).
  • The product consists of 6 rows. First, the squares are sewn into strips, and then the strips into a whole fabric.
  • There are 6 squares in the bottom three rows. In each higher row the number of squares decreases, in the topmost there are only 2.
  • When all the stripes are sewn, all that remains is to trim the product with braid and sew the ties at the top and sides.

Towel apron

To sew an apron, you can use a kitchen towel with a themed pattern. If the base is sewn from fabric of variegated colors, it is better to make the pockets and trim monochromatic.

"Remakes" from old things

A men's shirt will make an excellent apron for the kitchen. Cut off the sleeves and back and finish the edges with a hem stitch. Sew a thin belt at waist level. Now you can go cook dinner!

You can sew it from an old dress or jeans

The applique can be cut out from scraps of fabric, or you can buy a ready-made one in a store for sewing enthusiasts

You can sew it from laminated cotton, in which case you don’t have to waste time removing stubborn stains

Without an accurate pattern it is impossible to sew a quality product. Create a base pattern according to your measurements and you can model a wide variety of styles. Or you can find a suitable version of the finished drawing and cut the product according to it. Now you can be stylish and fashionable even in your own kitchen!

Does your little housewife need an apron? Sew it yourself!

Here's what you'll need:

One meter of patterned fabric (this is more than enough, unless you are going to add a chef's hat to the apron, which will take another half a meter).

  • One meter of one-color fabric, in harmony with the first.
  • One meter of Velcro tape (you don't use all of it).
  • Ruler or tape measure (or coordinating board).

Step by step

Step 1. Creating a paper pattern. It's much easier than you think. Especially in the case of a product like this. Simply fold the paper in half (this will ensure symmetry), draw the outline of the apron, and cut it out. By attaching the template to your daughter, you can evaluate how suitable it is and what needs to be changed. Rework the template if necessary.

Step 2. Making a pocket template is even easier. Also fold the paper in half and repeat the steps, but this time fitting is not required.

Step 3. Cut or fold the pattern in half. Pin to the folded fabric. Trace with a pencil or chalk and cut out, leaving 5 mm for the seams. Repeat the procedure with another fabric - for the lining.

Step 4. Repeat step 3, only with the pocket.

Step 5. Cut out two ribbons from one-color fabric:

For a strap approximately 70x8 cm (adjust according to your girl);

For a frill approximately 100x8 cm.

From patterned fabric we cut out a ribbon for the neck strap, approximately 38x10 cm.

Step 6. Place the two parts of the pocket together, wrong side to side, and sew, leaving a small opening for turning inside out. Make small cuts on the corners, as in the photo.

We turn the pocket inside out, pin it to the apron, and sew it on. To ensure that the pocket is exactly in the center, first fold the apron in half and mark the center. But the pocket should be located below the waist, since there will be a belt on it.

Step 7: Fold and press both edges of the waistband inward by 0.5 cm and stitch.

Fold the waistband in half lengthwise and sew, leaving 3 mm from the edge.

Turn out the belt. Iron it so that the seam is in the middle.

Step 8. At the very beginning, the neck strap is sewn in the same way as the belt. Fold and sew the edges.

Fold the strap in half and iron it.

Open it back up and iron it again, folding the sides along the center line.

Fold it in half and iron it again.

Sew on both sides, retreating 3 mm.

Sew a piece of scratchy Velcro to one end of the neck strap.

Step 9: Fold the edges of the frill tape and stitch.

Fold in half lengthwise with the wrong side facing in and iron.

Sew the edges by setting the machine to the longest stitch length and highest thread tension. While sewing, you can still pull the thread, creating resistance.

This way your frill will come together properly.

Sew the frill to the raw bottom edge of the apron.

Step 10. Let's put it all together. Sew one edge of the neck strap to one of the top corners of the piece, making sure the other edge is velcroed to the wrong side.

Sew a piece of Velcro onto the other top corner of the apron from the inside out. This should be done before sewing the lining and the base of the apron, so that the seam is not end-to-end, that is, it remains invisible from the outside.

Place the lining and base of the apron face to face, secure with pins and sew, leaving an opening for turning.

Sew, leaving 0.5 mm from the edge.

Make the cuts. Press the seams open.

Turn out and iron.

Find the center of your apron again and the center of your waistband - pin them together.

Sew the belt, retreating 3 mm from its edges.

If there is enough length, you can tie it. If not, sew on a Velcro fastener.

Velcro will make it easier for your child to put on and take off the apron on their own.

How to sew a chef's hat and apron? Often parents are faced with the question of sewing a suit for their child for a matinee in kindergarten or for school. Sometimes at holidays you need to play the role of a cook.

To do this, you will need to sew at least two elements of the costume: a chef's hat and an apron. To complete such a task, you do not need to be a professional seamstress or have a sewing machine. This article describes in detail how to sew a chef's hat with your own hands for a child. Believe me, you will do great.

Taking measurements

Before you start sewing any clothes, you need to take your measurements correctly. When creating a chef's hat, you need to measure the circumference of the child's head. Before sewing a chef's hat, you also need to think about the clasp at the back in advance. It can be Velcro, buttons, elastic, ties. If the rectangle of the cap will be closed, then you need to add a few centimeters to the head circumference for Velcro. The same goes for button closures. To sew on a wide elastic band, you can make the strap 5 cm shorter by sewing it on the back of the product. If you decide to tie the strap at the back with strings, then fabric the size of your head circumference will be enough. The plank can be sealed using an additional lining: inserts made of dense material of the same color.

To understand how you need to carefully look at the patterns. For the cap itself, you need to take a circle, the diameter of which will be equal to twice the length of the rim. This will turn out to be a folded cap. If it is smooth and cylindrical in shape, then you can take the same measurements. It is better if the folds are still present, forming a small beret on top. It can be beautifully laid on the side of the head.

How to sew a chef's hat for a child using a pattern?

It is best to first transfer the measurements onto thick paper, drawing a drawing of both the rim and the circle. It is better to make a double rim. This way it will be denser, and it will be easier to sew the parts together. Once the drawings are ready, they can be transferred to the material. Don't forget to leave 1 cm of fabric at the hems. To ensure that the top is sewn beautifully with even distribution of folds, you need to take the next step.

You should stretch a thread around the circumference of the circle, stitching the fabric along the edge with basting stitches. It is better to take a thick cotton thread so that it does not break when pulled together. When the thread is threaded around the entire circumference, you need to tighten it to the size of the rim. To make the fold even, you need to straighten it with your hand, spreading it along the entire edge.

Before you need to baste the rim around the circle, apply the resulting beret with the wrong side. In this case, the seam will be internal. All that remains is to fold the rectangle of the headband in half and carefully sew the second part of it so that the seam is not visible. If the housewife has a sewing machine, then the process is faster and easier. Then the seams can be on the front side. If the machine is not at home, then it is better to hide the seams on the wrong side for an aesthetic appearance of the product. All that remains is to sew on the fasteners and try the product on the child’s head. Such a detailed explanation of how to sew a chef's hat for a child using a pattern will help you easily cope with sewing.

Chef's apron

To sew a chef's costume, you not only need to know how to sew a chef's hat for a child using a pattern, but an apron is also necessary. Let's look carefully at the drawing of the presented apron pattern. You will need very little material and a piping that will be sewn around the perimeter of the apron. First you need to draw a drawing on thick paper according to these measurements. They can be adjusted depending on the child's height. The notch for the arm can be drawn by eye using patterns or a protractor. Then everything is transferred to the fabric and cut along the contour with sharp scissors. A piping is sewn around the perimeter of the apron. You can choose any length of the apron; the presence of a pocket is also a personal matter for everyone.

You can also vary the colors. The apron and the circle of the cap can be made of bright material of any color, and it is better to make the rim white. You can do the opposite: the apron and apron are made of white fabric, and the piping and upper circle of the cap are sewn from colored fabric.

If you want your baby to feel comfortable at the party, then don’t be afraid to pick up a thread and a needle. In fact, absolutely anyone can learn to sew; there is nothing complicated about it. In one evening, you can sew according to the advice in this article. All that remains is to starch and iron all the details well, then the cook will look just great.
