Function keys of the powerbook g4 laptop. PowerBook G4 review: specifications, design, features

Such things can leave few people indifferent. Even if a person doesn’t understand anything at all about computers and is absolutely indifferent to them, when he sees the Apple Powerbook G4 17” he gets very strong emotions in several stages. The first is, of course, the screen. Not every desktop computer can boast of a “wide” 17 inches and a resolution of 1440x900, but here it’s just a laptop. The second thing that is no less surprising is the metal body, which is only 2.6 cm thick with a total weight of 3.1 kg. Well, you can finally “finish off” a person by showing him MacOS X in action (Expose+Dock is quite enough ;-), how to insert a disc (slot loading) and how a DVD plays on a full wide screen. Interesting?

Apple never makes ordinary things, be it even a keyboard, mouse or power supply. The release of any product that bears the signature bitten apple is something special. Since the company produces both hardware and software, this solves several problems at once, such as compatibility, rapid transition to the most modern technologies, and a holistic impression of the product. This is why Apple has so many fans around the world and, in marketing terms, so much brand loyalty. When you buy an Apple computer, you are not just buying a computer; it is equally a piece of art and a source of pride in front of your colleagues/friends. To some extent it is a lifestyle.

PowerBook G4

Let's return to the PowerBook. In total, the line includes three main modifications with 12”, 15” and 17” screens. The first is a typical compact laptop computer.

The 15” model is a mid-range model, but with a wide screen.

And finally, the 17” model is a chic, full-fledged replacement for a desktop computer. At the same time, it has a metal body, is very thin (2.6 cm) and very light (3.1 kg) for its class. I was most interested in the 17” model, which will be discussed later, but the main points will equally apply to the younger models.

Design

The design of the PowerBook can be called industrial-minimalistic. Sharp and rounded corners, silver body color. Nothing extra. The thinnest screen frame possible. There are no indicators like hard drive, optical drive, battery, or power activity. Laptop size – 39.2x25.9x2.6 cm, weight – 3.1 kg including battery.

The top and bottom panels of the laptop are made of aluminum, the inner panel and keyboard are made of silver plastic. By the way, the owner of one of these laptops claimed that his computer survived a fall on the asphalt while it was turned on. The laptop suffered minor damage and a small dent on the body.

I won't list all the ports, just take a look at the diagram.

An interesting point is related to the screen latch, which usually sticks out in the upper part of the lid in laptops. The PowerBook is designed in such a way that when opened, both latches are hidden in the lid body and are completely invisible. It’s a small thing, but it’s these little things that form the overall impression. It is also necessary to note the original fastening of the lid to the body.

Another original design solution is slot loading of disks. Besides the fact that it looks great, it eliminates the need for a not-so-secure pull-out tray. True, there is a drawback - there may be problems with loading disks of non-standard sizes or shapes. The disk eject button is located in the upper right corner of the keyboard.

Well, one stylish detail completes the picture - on the back of the screen there is a hole in the lid in the shape of the famous apple, which glows along with the backlight of the LCD panel! Looks amazing. The owner of a PowerBook can be seen from afar; this cannot be confused with anything else.

Cursor control and keyboard

A little from the touchpad. The very first thing you realize when you start working is that there is only one mouse button! At first, this leads to a certain stupor and misunderstanding, coupled with the lack of scrolling, albeit virtual, as on PC laptops. Historically, Macintosh computers have only one mouse button and no scrolling, including PowerBooks. To make a “right click” familiar to a PC user, you need to hold down Ctrl. But the most interesting thing is that when you connect a two-button mouse with a scroll wheel, both keys and even the scroll wheel work fully. Why Apple doesn't make two-button scrolling mice, but easily supports such mice from other manufacturers, is a mystery to me. After all, scrolling and the context menu are very convenient.

The keyboard presents no less surprises than the mouse and touchpad. Instead of the usual Ctrl, Alt, Win, there is Ctrl, Option, Command. In addition, on the laptop keyboard there is 2 enter, and in place of Backspace - Delete! If you connect an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard, you will find new interesting keys - F13, F14, F15, F16, Help and Backspace, which was lost on the laptop. There are no traces of the Ins, Print Screen, Scroll Lock, Pause or Num Lock keys. By the way, Russian letters are printed at the factory both on the laptop and on the large keyboard.

The Ctrl key is used quite rarely and mainly for the context menu when working with the mouse. Basic shortcuts use the Option and Command keys. When working with MacOS X, it is important not to be lazy and learn the basic keyboard shortcuts. This will make your work much more convenient, and this is the only way you can experience the full power of this operating system.

The PowerBook 17" has a backlit keyboard. The built-in sensor evaluates external lighting and, if it is insufficient, automatically turns on the keyboard backlight from the inside. The letters themselves on the keyboard and the spaces between them glow. Since Russian letters are made in the same way as the English layout, the illumination effect extends to them. In addition, the brightness of the backlight can be adjusted either manually or automatically depending on the amount of external light.

Still, to constantly work with the PowerBook, it is better to purchase an external keyboard; the Apple Wireless Keyboard is ideal for this purpose. The Bluetooth connection occurs without problems and everything works clearly and reliably.

Even if this screen doesn’t seem enough, you can connect a large Apple Cinema Display monitor and work on two screens at once. Thanks to the digital DVI connection, the image quality will be perfect even on a huge panel.

Battery and power

The laptop power supply is compact and shaped like a parallelepiped with smooth corners. It's not entirely simple. First, you can connect either a plug directly to it or a plug with an extension cord, depending on how far your workplace is from the power outlet. Secondly, the extra end of the wire from the power supply to the laptop can be carefully wound up using special folding protrusions on the block. And third, the battery charging progress indicator is located on the connector that connects to the laptop and is made in the form of a luminous ring that changes its color from orange (charging in progress) to green (charging complete).

The laptop battery has a capacity of 58 Wh and according to the specification provides a battery life of 4.5 hours. Of course, in reality the operating time is somewhat shorter, but nevertheless quite decent for a laptop with such a screen.

MacOS X

To give at least an initial idea of MacOS X, we need a format that is not just articles, but rather even books. We will definitely do a separate review of this operating system. In the meantime, all we can say is that this OS works even better than it looks. If you've never worked with MacOS, the interface will seem confusing and illogical at first. But the more time you spend at work, the more you start to like it. Everything is falling into place. And if you also learn some basic keyboard shortcuts, you'll be amazed at how easy it is to perform most actions.

In the end

The Apple PowerBook G4 17” is, on the one hand, a high-tech laptop with an impressive screen and outstanding capabilities, and on the other, a very attractive image item that can decorate any interior, be it a home or an office. Comparing it with PC analogues is inappropriate and hardly possible. And among Apple laptops it has no equal.

Apple PowerBook G4 17″ provided by the company ByPrint Service.

Actually, all the discussions, discussions and debates around the PowerBook G4 17" came down to one question: for what types of work can a laptop with a wide, 17-inch display (resolution 1440 x 900 pixels) be used, which would be impossible for their counterparts with a 15-inch screen diagonally?

Let's wait a bit and take a closer look at other, no less remarkable features of this PowerBook, which seem to be almost invisible against the backdrop of its large display. Let's start with the technical characteristics: PowerPC G4 processor with a frequency of 1 GHz, 1 MB L3 cache, 512 MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM, video subsystem on NVidia GeForce4 440 Go with 64 MB DDR SDRAM, Toshiba hard drive with a capacity of 60 GB, Superdrive slot optical drive (DVD-R/CD-RW) by Matsushita. Outstanding connectivity: 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet, built-in 56K V.92 modem, built-in AirPort Extreme (802.11g) and Bluetooth 1.1. Among other things, it is worth noting the FireWire 800 port, PC-Card slot, S-Video and DVI outputs. The lithium-ion battery, according to the manufacturer, provides up to 4.5 hours of battery life.

The external design of the laptop also deserves attention. The body is made of anodized aluminum, resistant to scratches and stains. The thickness of the computer when closed is only 2.6 cm, however, due to the size of the display it looks quite large - 39 x 25.4 cm. The two speakers located on the sides of the keyboard also attract the eye. By the way, the latter features another interesting innovation - the built-in ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the display backlight and, if necessary, turns on the keyboard backlight (!), making it comfortable to work on the laptop in any lighting.

And now let’s return to the sacramental question: “For what?” The first thing that comes to mind, given the wide display format, is for home theater. And although it is difficult to say how popular the ability to watch movies with this resolution and on a screen of this size may become “on the road”, the use of the PowerBook is not limited to this.

Imagine, for example, a mobile photo and video editing studio. A correspondent armed with a video camera and this laptop, after filming the material, connects it to a PowerBook G4 via fast FireWire 800, edits the video using non-linear video editing programs Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere, then logs into the Internet via AirPort (Wi-Fi), a mobile phone with Bluetooth or modem and transmits your creation to the studio, for example, by uploading it through iDisk, Apple's service for providing virtual disk space on the Internet. A large and wide screen allows you to more objectively assess the quality of video material and feel freer when working with it, since the desktop, in addition to viewing windows, usually houses many software tools and controls. And the ability to work in any lighting with automatic adaptation to its changes will allow you to edit “hot” scenes, as they say, “on your knees.”

Well, despite the seeming implausibility of such a scenario, there is nothing unrealistic about it. Apple, as a rule, knows well what it is doing, and indirect evidence of this is the successful sale of this model - given the considerable cost, I think the same can be said about its buyers. After all, to paraphrase a common aphorism, “if these laptops buy, it means that someone really needs them"!

Apple PowerBook G4 "Titanium"

Introduction

Personally, Apple products have always aroused genuine interest in me. This may sound a little pompous, but the main slogan of Apple in recent years - “Think different” - is applicable to almost all products produced by the company. Be it a desktop computer, a mouse or a subwoofer - everywhere there is a place for some non-standard idea, a spark , if you will, which immediately sets the Apple product apart from the rest. It may be an unusual color of the case, an unusual connector for an optical drive, an unusual shape and size, an unusual set of software - it doesn’t matter, but it’s impossible to work with Apple’s and at the same time think in a standard way. Don’t think, I’m not an Apple fan, I’m not at all I think that you should be a fan of even beautiful and original hardware. However, in this article I will try to give examples of non-standard thinking characteristic of Apple.

And this article will talk about the new Apple PowerBook G4 “Titanium” laptop. Unlike another laptop - the Apple iBook, which cannot be classified as a professional model, the "Titanium" is a hi-end model intended, as it is fashionable to say, "for demanding users."

Let me make a reservation right away: in this article you will not find any tables with numbers, diagrams, or graphs. In general, the world of Apple is so different from wintel that it is very difficult to give any quantitative characteristics of performance. Yes, of course, you can run the same PhotoShop on a PowerBook and on a PC, measure the speed of applying certain filters... However, I would not risk drawing conclusions about the performance of the processor installed in the PowerBook or its disk subsystem based on such measurements. There are too many side factors that are practically impossible to take into account: these are different ideologies of operating systems, different optimizations of application code, and differences in the implementation of multitasking. In a word, you, dear readers, will have to rely on my subjective impressions, especially since there are not so few of them.

Technical parameters of PowerBook G4

But first, it’s probably worth giving the technical specifications of the PowerBook:

  • PowerPC G4 400-500 MHz processor with Velocity Engine module (analogous to 3DNow! and SSE), containing 64 KB of first-level cache and 1 MB of second-level cache, operating at half frequency;
  • System bus 100 MHz;
  • 128-256 MB SDRAM PC100 RAM, expandable up to 1 GB;
  • Hard drive 10 or 20 GB, ATA/66;
  • Slot drive DVD-ROM (6x DVD, 24x CD);
  • Built-in 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet network card;
  • Built-in modem 56K, V.90;
  • Infrared port 4 Mbit/s;
  • FireWire port (IEEE 1394);
  • Two USB ports;
  • VGA port for connecting an external monitor;
  • S-video output (included is an adapter for low-frequency input);
  • Video card ATI Rage Mobility 128, AGP 2x;
  • Lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 50 Wh;
  • Thickness - 1 inch, weight - 2.4 kg including battery.

First impressions

The laptop is really very thin: 1 inch is quite a bit. The metallic color case is made of titanium alloy. In this model, Apple decided to abandon the already slightly boring speckled raspberry-orange colors and translucent elements. The PowerBook is made in a strict, maybe even a little ascetic style, which, in my opinion, does not deprive it of its attractiveness. After all, it’s unlikely that a reputable businessman can afford to flaunt a colorful, almost acid-colored laptop. But a strict silver PowerBook is quite suitable.

Well, we digress. On the front panel there is a button that unfastens the screen cover. Opening the PowerBook you will see a 15.2 inch TFT screen, keyboard and trackpad. To be honest, such a wide screen on a laptop makes a strong impression. The buttons on the keyboard are black, there are no Russian letters. However, as the Apple distributor assured us, PowerBooks are delivered to end users with sticker letters.

There is a slot for optical drives on the front panel. The laptop is equipped with a DVD-ROM drive, which, of course, can also read CD-ROM discs. The slot design looks quite good, considering that a sliding or folding tray can cause inconvenience on the road. Well, in the side section there is a slot for standard PC Card.

Apple offers several configurations of the PowerBook G4. The processor frequency (400 or 500 MHz) and the hard drive capacity (10 or 20 GB) vary. We received a junior model equipped with a 400 MHz processor and a 10 GB hard drive. Anticipating the disappointment of those who expected to see a higher processor frequency, I will say that the architecture of the PowerPC G4 processor is seriously different from the x86, and the computing pipeline has only 4 stages. Therefore, drawing conclusions about performance simply by looking at the frequency is not entirely correct.

The network capabilities of the PowerBook are not anything extraordinary. I will only note that, if desired, it can be connected to a regular Windows network. To do this, you will have to download and install a small utility (for example, Dave from Thursby Software) - after this, the functions of Windows networks will become available, including shared access to network resources.

The undoubted advantage of the PowerBook is the ability to connect devices with a FireWire interface. This can be a digital DV camera, an external CD-R/CD-RW drive, or any other drive. Well, using one of the two USB ports, you You can also use other external devices: ZIP drive, printer, scanner, digital camera, etc.

Alas, Apple does not install a 3.5-inch drive in the PowerBook G4, as well as in the iBook and iMac. Of course, one could argue that the time of three-inch floppy disks is long gone, but there is still no single alternative! Therefore, sometimes situations may arise where the lack of a disk drive can be painful. Personally, I encountered this problem while writing an article. After taking a few screenshots, I began to look for a way to “transfer” the images to the PC. Alas, I didn’t have a ZIP at hand, I don’t have any network other than 220V at home, so I had to connect the PowerBook to the Internet and send the information to myself by mail. You can, of course, use the infrared port, but how many desktop PCs do they use? equipped? At worst, there is another solution - to purchase an external USB drive, but it is generally not cheap, about $80.

The PowerBook G4's screen is amazing. Large viewing angle, good color rendering and contrast, fast response. Let's just say that I did not experience any discomfort either in games or when watching DVD movies. The image changed on time, without any delays or other unpleasant effects.

Scope of delivery

When you open the box, you will find inside:

  1. PowerBook G4 "Titanium";
  2. Power unit;
  3. Adapter from S-Video to low-frequency input;
  4. Telephone cable;
  5. Two user manuals in Russian and English;
  6. Software set.

Of unconditional interest is the power supply. This is a translucent silver coil with an electrical cable wound around it. If you plug it into a power outlet, it starts to glow. Nothing out of the ordinary, but the original design certainly attracts attention. Almost the same power supply is used, by the way, in the iBook.

An S-Video to LF adapter will be needed primarily by those who plan to watch DVDs or VideoCDs on TV. Alas, not all, if not rare, TVs have an S-Video input. But almost every model is equipped with a low-frequency input. In such a situation, the presence of an adapter demonstrates basic and very pleasant care for the user.

The user manual is a fairly lengthy softcover book. The print quality is beyond praise. But the content, to be honest, raises certain complaints. The main attention is paid to the operating system and applications from the standard package. At the same time, there is almost no information about the laptop itself.

In action

But first of all, we should find out what set of software the manufacturer considered necessary to provide us with. The PowerBook G4 comes pre-installed with the English version of Mac OS 9.1, which, however, supports both Russian and Ukrainian layouts and fonts. You will also find the following packages on the CDs:

  • iMovie is a complex for video editing and editing.
  • iTunes is a program with functionality similar to Windows Media Player. Allows you to play various media files, incl. and MP3, as well as digitize music from CD-ROM, again using the MP3 format.
  • Browsers Internet Explorer Mac Edition 5.0 and Netscape Navigator 4.7.
  • Apple Hardware Test is a testing and diagnostic package.
  • Apple DVD Player is a software DVD player.

Alas, that's all. Why "alas"? Yes, because while on a PC the choice of software, including free software, is practically unlimited, then on a Mac the software base is significantly smaller. To be honest, I was always touched by conversations in the style of “Mac has Quake” or “BeOS has a C compiler.” This is wonderful, but for the wintel platform such questions do not arise at all. On PC there are dozens of Quake-like games, C compilers for every taste, and all sorts of archivers, FTP clients, etc. can't be counted at all.

Therefore, the set of software that comes with the PowerBook should be treated with special care. By the way, some, at first glance, unexpected functions are implemented at the operating system level. For example, to burn a CD you just need to select the appropriate item in the menu. This The feature is hard-wired into MacOS.

Available for Mac OS and Microsoft Office. Word, Excel, PowerPoint run like a charm, at least I didn’t experience any problems (part of this article, by the way, was typed on a PowerBook).

True, Microsoft Office is not included in the standard package; you will have to pay for it. Otherwise, you will have to use the simple text editor SimpleText, which, unfortunately, cannot work with tables. Or abandon MS Office altogether and choose the AppleWorks package, which is similar in functionality.

Of course, I tried to access the Internet using the PowerBook. Alas, stable communication using the V.90 protocol was not always established, and not with all providers. I don’t know whether the PowerBook modem should be blamed for this - nevertheless, the quality of domestic telephone lines still leaves much to be desired.

Internet Explorer for Mac, to be honest, left a rather painful impression. It clearly has some problems with some sites - when loading them, it stops itself and stops the entire system. Minutes at 1.5. You sit and spit at the ceiling, wait, and then you press the Back button and everything repeats again. “Experienced” people advise using Internet Explorer 4.5, it doesn’t seem to have these problems.

Netscape is also weird. It can freeze itself and hang the entire system. On some sites it experiences unexpected problems with Russian letters, displaying beautiful but completely useless squares instead.

In a word, I would still prefer the Explorer to it. An alternative option is also available - Opera for MacOS. You can download it from the developer's website.

But watching DVD does not cause any problems. You insert the disc and watch. No squares, frame drops or other artifacts were noticed. If desired, the image can be displayed either on an external monitor or on a TV via the S-Video output. Here, by the way, I had a small crisis. Like any normal Windows user, I went to the DVD player menu and started looking there for how to switch the image to an external signal receiver. Didn't find it. I visited the display settings and couldn't find it. I was just beginning to despair when it dawned on me that I just needed to drag the window with the DVD movie onto another screen. That's all. But in order to do this, you need to start “thinking different”.

To get more than stereo sound out of your PowerBook, you should get USB speakers. Otherwise, you will have to use a regular 16-bit minijack connector and forget not only about Dolby Digital, but even about the downmix for 4 speakers.

The package also includes a fairly powerful and functional video processing package - iMovie. Despite the somewhat toy interface, it has quite a wide range of video editing capabilities. This includes applying various video effects, creating titles, adjusting the brightness, contrast and color scheme of the image, and adding audio. A good library of ready-made effects and smooth transitions between scenes is provided. Of course, a central processor is used for calculations, so you can’t expect great speed. However, iMovie does an excellent job with its functions - I saw a film lasting half an hour, with effects and a sound track. It was created on a PowerBook.

Generally speaking, the PowerBook can be turned into a kind of portable editing studio. I connected a FireWire digital camera, merged the video, did some initial processing, immediately recorded it on CD (via an external drive) and off to the studio. The distributor of Apple products in Ukraine - WEGA Distribution - claims that there are cases of purchasing PowerBooks specifically for such use.

Finally, about the keyboard and trackpad. You will not find the Del button - I don’t know for what reasons, but it is not provided. Frankly speaking, at first it’s incredibly annoying, but then you get used to it, of course. You won't find a second mouse button either - Apple traditionally offers to make do with one, using the keys on the keyboard as modifiers. You also get used to it over time. Well, if you don’t like it, connect a “big” keyboard and mouse via USB.

Battery operation

The manufacturer claims that the PowerBook G4 can operate continuously on battery power for 5 hours. Of course, this is the upper limit. During normal operation it turns out less. Our survival tests gave a result of 3 hours 40 minutes - 4 hours. At the same time, from time to time a DVD drive was used, an Internet connection was made, etc. At the same time, the system operated in energy-saving mode with a reduced processor frequency (here we can probably draw an analogy with AMD PowerNow! and Intel SpeedStep technologies). Well, for those who want to get the most out of their batteries, we can advise this:

  1. work at reduced monitor brightness;
  2. turn off the sound;
  3. do not touch the DVD drive;
  4. Whenever possible, disconnect the hard drive (on the PowerBook G4 this can be done manually from the menu).

Modernization

Users can increase the amount of RAM themselves. To do this, you need to unfasten the keyboard and insert the module into the corresponding slot. Without professional help, users can also retrofit a PowerBook G4 with an AirPort card for wireless networking. You will need to go to the service center if you want to increase the capacity of your hard drive. By the way, you should not forget about the PC Card, with which you can connect various devices, for example, an external TV tuner.

Price and positioning

Retail prices for the PowerBook G4 are $2847 and $3819 for the junior and senior models, respectively. A bit expensive? Perhaps. However, do not forget about the wide screen, DVD drive, small thickness and weight. Whether these amenities are worth the money they ask for is up to you to decide; of course, I can’t help you here.

Ratings

Summing up the “subjective impressions”, we get the following estimates:

Total: 88 points.

Completeness. The standard delivery set includes everything you need, including a user manual in Russian. I was also very pleased with the presence of an S-Video-LF adapter, with which you can easily display images (including DVD, CD Video) on a TV. The ability to connect 4 or more speakers is only possible via USB. Minus 1 point, taking into account that the laptop can hardly be considered as a home multimedia center.

Appearance and ergonomics. The stylish design certainly does credit to the manufacturer. Taking into account the very small thickness and weight of the device with impressive equipment, we gave the highest possible rating in this category.

Ease of use. The lack of a disk drive, whatever one may say, is still a drawback that cost the PowerBook G4 3 points. Some dampness of Internet browsers, which can force the user to look for alternative solutions - another 3 points. The rest, including the one-button trackpad, is a matter of habit.

User support. The user manual, which looks good, unfortunately, does not contain sufficient information about the internal structure of the laptop and its settings. The main attention is paid to the operating system and standard set of software. Minus 5 points.

Compliance with positioning and price. The price for the PowerBook G4 "Titanium" cannot be called low. However, the technical characteristics of this laptop are at a high level, and the potential range of capabilities provided (note the video editing capabilities) is quite wide. We believe that the device corresponds to the hi-end class, but the affordability of the price is a purely personal matter.

Conclusions

In general, the PowerBook G4 "Titanium" can be safely called a worthy representative of the family of hi-end laptops. I think it will be an excellent choice for those who can afford to highlight their style with a rather unusual, but nevertheless very attractive laptop.

Advantages:

  1. small size and weight
  2. big screen
  3. advanced capabilities for connecting peripherals
  4. advanced iMovie in the standard software package

Flaws:

  1. possible problems with modem communication using the V.90 protocol
  2. Connecting more than two speakers is only possible via USB

We thank the company WEGA Distribution, which provided the PowerBook G4 "Titanium"
for testing purposes.
