Eye gouging. Amputation as a criminal punishment

The Nazis cut off her ears and gouged out her eyes, but the girl did not betray anyone

Somehow, the 90th anniversary of the birth of the heroic partisan, who was born in 1926, passed completely unnoticed. But in Soviet times, all schoolchildren had the names of Volodya Dubinin, Marat Kazei, Leni Golikov, Valya Kotik and other pioneer heroes of the Great Patriotic War jumping off their teeth. In this series, Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumously) Zina Portnova rightfully takes her place.

Fatal coincidence

Zina was born in 1926 in Leningrad, in the area adjacent to the huge industrial giant - the plant named after. Kirov, where her father, Martyn Portnov, worked. The most ordinary girl, she studied like everyone else, well, or a little better than the rest, because the position obliged: due to her active life position, Zina was the head of the class.

Born into a family of Belarusians, she also had Western roots: there, in the Vitebsk region, in the village of Zuya, Zina’s grandmother lived, to whom she and her sister Galya were sent on vacation every summer. So in the tragic year of 1941, the girls who came to stay in Zui enjoyed nature, sunbathed, swam in the Luchos River and did not know grief. But the war began. And already on June 28, the fascist hordes took Minsk and immediately moved on to Orsha and Smolensk. It is for this reason that the girls did not have time to evacuate to the mainland, to the rear.

According to the surviving witnesses of that war, who, by the will of fate, found themselves in occupation, the Nazis mercilessly bombed the columns with refugees: they were not interested in the local residents, whom they had practically written down as their slaves, leaving their homes. The Nazis needed not only free labor, but also hostages - many hostages, with whom, if something happened, they could hide behind them as a shield, which later happened with frightening regularity.

The new order that the Germans established in the occupied territory could not please anyone. But among the Belarusians there were tens of thousands of people who not only could not calmly look at the atrocities of the representatives of the “superior race”, the “nation of masters”, but preferred to act - to fight this brown scourge. One of these caring people’s avengers was Zina Portnova, who from the very first days began to look for connections with the partisans or, at worst, patriots like herself. Often, through the fault of the provocateurs, such searches led to disastrous consequences: the Germans captured and shot in the hundreds people who were seen in connections with the partisans or simply did not agree with their occupation policy.

But Portnova was lucky - in 1942 she contacted the underground Komsomol organization headed by Efrosinya Zenkova (later Hero of the Soviet Union). It was here that Zina was accepted into the Komsomol in 1943. Much later they would be compared to the “Young Guard,” although the “Young Avengers,” as the underground Komsomol members called themselves, acted in parallel and at about the same time, depriving the occupiers of peace and lives in the same way. It’s just that documents about the activities of the Krasnodon heroes caught the eye of Alexander Fadeev after the war - so he glorified (deservedly) this collective feat.

"Bon" poisonous appetite

Starting with the little things of posting leaflets, the Young Avengers over time began to increasingly fight the hated regime. They disabled the Nazis' equipment, burned warehouses with ammunition and weapons... But it was Zina Portnova who distinguished herself more than her other comrades. She managed to get a job in a canteen for German officers, which she immediately took advantage of by adding a huge dose of poison to the common cauldron from which the Nazis were pouring soup. Thus, she sent more than a hundred Nazis to the next world.

The Nazis began searching for the perpetrators, suspecting everyone. Zina also came under suspicion, whom the Germans almost force-fed with that same soup. She didn’t remember how she got to the porch of her grandmother’s house, but she gave her herbal infusions and whey, and as a result, the girl remained alive. However, after what happened, it was mortally dangerous for her to remain in the village, and Portnova was transferred to a partisan detachment.

With the same fearlessness and courage with which she was not afraid to poison more than a hundred enemy officers, Zina now crushed the fascist invaders in the ranks of her partisan comrades. But even quite risky stocks seemed not dangerous enough to her. She longed for the most important task, to prove to her friends and herself that she was no longer the same girl who had just joined the underground group of Komsomol members a few months ago. That she is worthy of the high title of people's avenger and is ready for the most dangerous and risky tasks of the partisan command.

And the opportunity soon presented itself. However, this was a tragic occasion: in early autumn, for unknown reasons, the Germans arrested the backbone of the Young Avengers organization. For a whole month, Komsomol members (thirty people were arrested) were brutally tortured, extracting information from them about where the rest of the underground fighters and partisans were hiding. In the end, the “young avengers” were shot. And then Zina volunteered to penetrate the fascist garrison to find out who became a traitor and betrayed her comrades.

Last task

It would seem that this was initially an obvious gamble - to climb into the very mouth of a fierce enemy, brutalized by the sabotage that the Young Avengers regularly carried out. But Portnova needed just such a task, although by that time they were looking for her with might and main after the incident with the poisoning of German officers. Be that as it may, apparently, the traitor learned that Zina had appeared in the garrison, and she was immediately captured.

Following the logic of things, the thugs from the Gestapo, where the intelligence officer was brought, at first tried to keep appearances and offered her a “carrot”. They say, nothing will happen to you, girl, if you show everyone where the partisans are hiding and tell who is part of the detachment. Moreover, the “carrot” was supposed to not only “sweeten”, but also frighten: on the table of the Gestapo investigator, as if by chance, lay a loaded pistol to intimidate Portnova.

This frivolity cost the German officer dearly: he never imagined that a young girl could distinguish a pistol from a revolver, much less be able to use it for its intended purpose. One way or another, as soon as the fascist turned away for a moment, Zina grabbed a weapon from the table and shot at the Nazi. Then, without wasting a minute, she rushed out of the Gestapo building. They tried to detain her, but Portnova, with an unwavering hand, shot two more pursuers.

But they didn’t let her leave: machine gun fire hit her legs - and the girl fell as if knocked down. The Nazis were furious; they no longer needed information from her about the partisans and underground fighters: the Gestapo was now driven only by revenge for the murdered Krauts. In a blind, cold rage, they began to torture. The masters systematically drove needles under Zina’s nails and burned stars on her body with a hot iron. It got to the point that the young girl’s ears were cut off and her eyes were gouged out.

Portnova behaved extremely stoically. She didn’t utter a word, but from inhuman pain and overexertion she turned gray. The fascist thugs did everything to break the “young avenger.” But nothing worked out for them: Zina Portnova walked on her last journey on January 10, 1944 (to execution) with her head held high. Later, at the Nuremberg trials, this whole gang of scum and sadists will claim that they followed the orders of their commanders when they shot civilians and tortured partisans, and they themselves, they say, had nothing to do with it. However, the fact remains: every fourth resident of Belarus during the war was destroyed by Nazi and nationalist scum.

The feat of Zina Portnova was not forgotten: monuments were erected to her, streets in Leningrad and Belarus were named after her, as well as a ship in the Far Eastern Shipping Company. In 1958, Zinaida Martynovna Portnova was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumously). More than 70 years have passed since her death. But her memory is still alive and will live forever.

When they say that an eye has leaked out, they can put different meanings into it.

In fact, the eye can leak due to traumatic destruction (scleral rupture, compression injury) or purulent melting in some inflammatory diseases (endophthalmitis, panophthalmitis).

Leakage mechanism

The eyeball, due to the fact that it is 2/3 filled with vitreous, is very elastic. This helps him withstand strong impacts, whose kinetic energy will be transferred by the liquid filling deep into the skull. Unfortunately, with such an impact, the thin walls of the orbit (especially the bottom) take the blow and the contents of its cavity, that is, the eyeball, can descend into the maxillary cavity. However, the fatty body of the orbit allows in some cases to protect the eye from damage by bone fragments and preserve it from rupture.

If a small damaging object enters the eye, the eye first contracts, causing intraocular pressure to increase. There is a posterior displacement of the iris and lens, as well as their rupture. Instantly the shock wave travels to the posterior pole of the eye and then returns forward. Such vibrations cause damage to internal structures. If the intraocular pressure was very strong (rupture of the sclera from the inside) or a traumatic object violated the integrity of the membranes of the eyeball, then its contents leak out. If the cornea is kept intact, you may notice its swelling and clouding. This intraocular fluid accumulates in the anterior chamber of the eye. In case of serious damage, a hyphema forms here - hemorrhage.

Traumatic damage to the retina leads to its ruptures, and the blood entering the vitreous saturates it, and hemophthalmos occurs.

With timely and proper medical care, the hemorrhage can resolve, but the eye remains intact. However, when injuries cause optic nerve atrophy or other disorders leading to atrophy of the eyeball in humans, there is a need for surgical removal of the organ from the orbit. This operation (evisceration) eliminates a serious source of possible infection for the entire body. The eye socket is also cleaned if the eye has leaked and cannot be restored.

Endophthalmitis caused by clostridia. Arrow points to opaque perforated cornea

With endophthalmitis, infection occurs in the internal structures of the eyeball - the membranes and the vitreous body. As a rule, infectious agents are introduced during penetrating trauma, failure to observe surgical asepsis, or a perforated corneal ulcer. An active inflammatory process covers the entire eyeball, pus is formed in large quantities, permeating its tissues, resulting in their complete melting.

Exudate leaking outward may be incorrectly interpreted as eye leakage. However, the disease has serious consequences - tractional retinal detachment and subatrophy of the eyeball. As a result, such an eye must be surgically removed to prevent the development of an abscess and sepsis of the brain. That is, people lose an eye in the same way as if it leaked.

How to proceed

In case of an eye injury, especially if it was suffered by a child, the victim must be taken to a doctor as soon as possible. Often, a bruise can mask a tear in the sclera, posing a threat of leakage of the eye in the future. In addition, one should always be wary of the development of an infectious process, therefore, if possible, the injured organ should be covered with a sterile napkin and, in this form, wait for an ambulance.

All infectious and inflammatory diseases of the eyes, including “harmless” conjunctivitis, dacryocystitis, barley, and the like, must be treated under the supervision of a doctor in order to prevent the generalized development of infection of the visual organ.

Cover the eye with a sterile bandage and refer the victim to a doctor

Other cases

There are other conditions under which the eyeball can leave the orbit and still remain intact. Some people may also call this condition eye leakage.

Why this might happen.

Tumor

A growth in the orbit or along the optic nerve physically increases pressure in the orbit and pushes the eyeball outward. The danger is posed by both the tumor itself and the fact that the blood vessels and optic nerve in this case experience tension and tension, which can gradually lead to their atrophy, and the extraocular muscles are pinched and cannot perform their function. Without the ability to lubricate it with tear fluid, the covering of the eyeball will become inflamed and feel dry.

Treatment is carried out surgically, removing the tumor. If it is malignant, the operation is aimed at cleansing the entire contents of the orbit (removing the eye) down to the bone walls.

Physiology

The peculiarity of connective tissue in some people makes the ligaments of the eyeballs very elastic. They are likely to “prolapse” the eyeball due to strong intracranial pressure, sneezing, or trying to exhale with an open mouth. Shallow eye sockets and overly flexible eyelids also make it easier for the eyes to come out of their sockets. Some people can control this process and “roll out” their eyes on purpose.

Some people can push their eyes out of their sockets at will.

What to do if the eye is intact, but has come out of its orbit? Look down. Press and pull the upper eyelid with the thumb and index finger of one hand. Use your other fingers to push the eyeball, touching only the insensitive sclera (the white part of the eye), towards the back, while continuing to hold the eyelid. The eyeball should be back in place. Try looking up. If everything is done correctly, your eye will rotate normally in the socket under the eyelid.

In more severe cases, this manipulation is performed by a doctor, and the eyeball is secured in place using special staples or a suture.

The patient receives pain relievers, anti-inflammatory corticosteroids, antibiotics, and lubricating drops or gels to moisten the cornea.

July 12, 2016 marks the 455th anniversary of one of the most famous architectural monuments of Moscow - the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin on the Moat, which we know as St. Basil's Cathedral.

This famous cathedral, with its powerful walls and vaults, used to be used for hiding places. Deep niches were built in the walls of the basement, the entrance to which was closed by metal doors. There were heavy forged chests in which rich townspeople kept their valuable property - money, jewelry, utensils and books. The royal treasury was also kept there. What other legends and secrets does the temple that we call St. Basil’s Cathedral keep today?

Where did the name "St. Basil's Cathedral" come from?

Despite the fact that the cathedral was built in 1554 in honor of the victories of Ivan the Terrible over the Golden Horde, it was popularly named St. Basil's, after the name of the chapel attached to the cathedral on the north-eastern side in 1588. It was built by order of the son of Ivan the Terrible - Fyodor Ioannovich over the grave of Blessed Vasily, who died in 1557, and was buried near the walls of the cathedral under construction. The holy fool walked naked in winter and summer, wearing iron chains; Muscovites loved him very much for his gentle disposition. In 1586, under Fyodor Ioannovich, the canonization of St. Basil took place. With the addition of St. Basil's Church, services in the cathedral became daily. Previously, the cathedral was not heated, since it was largely a memorial, and services were held in it only in the warm season. And the chapel of St. Basil's was warm and more spacious. Since then, the Intercession Cathedral has been known more as St. Basil's Cathedral.

Is it true that Ivan the Terrible gouged out the eyes of the temple builders?

The most common myth about the cathedral is the chilling story of gullible souls that Tsar Ivan IV allegedly ordered its builders, Postnik and Barma, to be blinded so that they would never be able to build anything else that could surpass and eclipse the newly erected architectural masterpiece. Meanwhile, there is no real historical evidence. Yes, the builders of the temple were really called Postnik and Barma. In 1896, Archpriest John Kuznetsov, who served in the temple, discovered a chronicle in which it was said that “The pious Tsar John came from the victory of Kazan to the reigning city of Moscow... And God gave him two Russian masters named Postnik and Barma and was wise and convenient for such a wonderful work ..." This is how the names of the cathedral’s builders became known for the first time. But there is not a word about blindness in the chronicles. Moreover, after completing the work in Moscow, Ivan Yakovlevich Barma took part in the construction of the Annunciation Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin, the Kazan Kremlin and other iconic buildings, which are mentioned in the chronicles.

Is it true that the cathedral was originally intended to be so colorful?

No, this is a wrong opinion. The current appearance of the Intercession Cathedral is very different from its original appearance. It had white walls, strictly painted to resemble brick. All the polychrome and floral painting of the cathedral appeared only in the 1670s. By this time, the cathedral had already undergone significant reconstruction: two large porches were added - on the north and south sides. The external gallery was also covered with vaults. Today in the decoration of the Intercession Cathedral you can see frescoes of the 16th century, tempera painting of the 17th century, monumental oil painting of the 18th-19th centuries, and rare monuments of Russian icon painting.

Is it true that Napoleon wanted to move the temple to Paris?

During the War of 1812, when Napoleon occupied Moscow, the Emperor liked the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary so much that he decided to move it to Paris. The technology of that time did not allow this to happen. Then the French first built stables in the temple, and later simply planted explosives in the base of the cathedral and lit the fuse. The assembled Muscovites prayed for the salvation of the temple, and a miracle happened - heavy rain began, which extinguished the wick.

Is it true that Stalin saved the Cathedral from destruction?

The temple miraculously survived the October Revolution - marks from shells remained on its walls for a long time. In 1931, a bronze monument to Minin and Pozharsky was moved to the cathedral - the authorities cleared the area of unnecessary buildings for parades. Lazar Kaganovich, who was so successful in destroying the Kazan Cathedral of the Kremlin, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and a number of other churches in Moscow, proposed completely demolishing the Intercession Cathedral in order to further clear the place for demonstrations and military parades. Legend has it that Kaganovich ordered the production of a detailed model of Red Square with a removable temple and brought it to Stalin. Trying to prove to the leader that the cathedral interfered with cars and demonstrations, he unexpectedly tore off the model of the temple from the square. The surprised Stalin allegedly at that moment uttered the historical phrase: “Lazarus, put him in his place!”, so the question of demolishing the cathedral was postponed. According to the second legend, the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary owes its salvation to the famous restorer P.D. Baranovsky, who sent telegrams to Stalin calling not to destroy the temple. Legend has it that Baranovsky, who was invited to the Kremlin on this issue, knelt before the assembled members of the Central Committee, begging to preserve the iconic building, and this had an unexpected effect.

Is it true that the Cathedral now serves only as a museum?

The historical and architectural museum in the cathedral was founded in 1923. However, even then, during Soviet times, services in the cathedral still continued. They continued until 1929, and resumed again in 1991. Today the cathedral is jointly used by the State Historical Museum and the Russian Orthodox Church. Divine services are held in St. Basil's Cathedral weekly on Sundays, as well as on patronal holidays - August 15, the day of remembrance of St. Basil, and October 14, the day of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Ukrainian punitive forces tortured two prisoners in the LPR to death in order to achieve obedience from the rest

In Ukraine it is a national holiday. After long, bloody and unsuccessful efforts, the Ukrainian military was able to capture a Russian soldier. This was reported by the BBC resource, citing sources in the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. Scans of the military ID and passport of Russian citizen Viktor Ageev are posted online.

But questions immediately arose.

What happened

The data is incomplete, so it is difficult to unambiguously reconstruct the picture of what happened.

According to reports released by the Ukrainian side, on June 24, near the village of Zhelobok, a military clash occurred between Ukrainian soldiers from the 93rd brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and a reconnaissance group of the 4th brigade of the 2nd corps of the LPR People's Militia. As a result, “four LPR fighters were captured, including 22-year-old Russian citizen Viktor Ageev.”

After his capture, the Russian citizen was handed over to the Security Service of Ukraine.

As documentary evidence, photographs of Viktor Ageev’s passport and military ID were shown. According to data from these documents, Ageev served in military service in the city of Novocherkassk, Rostov region, in 2015-2016. In March 2017, he signed a contract and remained in the army.

We will omit questions about this version for now and present the version of the other side - the LPR defense department. According to a statement by his official representative, Lieutenant Colonel Andrei Marochko, “On June 24, a Ukrainian sabotage group of the Special Operations Forces (Special Operations Forces - editor's note), which penetrated into the territory of the Lugansk People's Republic, on the Bakhmut highway, attacked a group of servicemen from the rear division who were delivering food to personnel. As a result of the attack, two servicemen were brutally killed killed. Before their death, they were subjected to severe torture. An examination of the bodies showed that each had more than ten knife wounds."

Four others were, according to Marochko, kidnapped and placed in the dungeons of the Security Service of Ukraine, where they were subjected to "inhuman psychological and physical pressure" so that they admit that they are Russian military personnel. At the same time, a representative of the People's Militia separately stated that the captured servicemen were residents of the LPR.

Andrei Marochko also said that “unidentified persons call the relatives of the kidnapped soldiers by phone and intimidate them, declaring that their only chance to save their loved ones is to come to the territory of Ukraine and publicly confirm that the captured soldiers are career soldiers of the Russian army.”

There are questions here too

Let’s try to get an answer to everything at once.

First: the village of Zhelobok is located in the Slavyanoserbsky region of the LPR, that is, on territory not controlled by Kyiv. Kyiv saboteurs, therefore, penetrated onto the wrong side of the contact line, which is in no way consistent with any Minsk agreements or truces.

Second: what should a Russian contract soldier do near Zhelobok? Yes, there were battles there recently, but for the command of the Russian army (and by default it is assumed that since he is a contract soldier of the RF Armed Forces, he is subordinate to the command of the RF Armed Forces and carries out his tasks) - why should this place of local conflict be interesting? Maybe Kiev propaganda painted an ordinary Russian volunteer as a contract soldier? Hence the torture - to force him to confess exactly this?

Third: “Russian military personnel” on the territory of the people’s republics are stepping on the same rake with unenviable persistence. Namely, they go out “on reconnaissance”, taking with them a full set of Russian documents, including a passport and military ID of the Russian Federation. With which documents they are caught and then presented to the press. It is strange that Russian intelligence officers do not take with them a driver’s license, certificates from the clinic, and receipts for payment for housing and communal services.

Fourth: how did the Ukrainian army know that in this case it was possible to capture a Russian military man? Was he being led? Where? From the personnel department of the People's Militia (PM) of the LPR? From Russia itself?

Fifth: why was this story revealed now, four days after the incident? At the same time, according to Marochko, Lugansk did everything possible to exchange the captured guys for Ukrainian prisoners - and there is a very valuable set of them in Lugansk, including active employees of the Ukrainian special services and saboteurs from the Special Forces. But no, Kyiv decided to sacrifice this opportunity in order to show a Russian private. Is it because the G20 summit is approaching, where it is important for the true masters of Ukraine (which is not included in the 20) to weaken Russia’s position through propaganda? And the fact that in the current episode in Donbass the BBC was immediately put forward as an information support seems to indicate precisely this plan.

The eyes of prisoners were gouged out so that others would be more accommodating.

To comment on the situation and try to answer these questions, Tsargrad asked one of the most informed experts on the struggle of the special services in Donbass and Ukraine, the famous political scientist Yuri Pershikov.

"Yes, we were captured, - he confirmed . - Yes, they admitted it - and it was necessary to admit it. And now we need to save the guys."

Precisely to save, he emphasized, because the Ukrainian punitive forces acted towards the LPR military personnel with truly fascist cruelty.

“Today, few people focus on the fact that sadyugi from the Ukrainian troops, in front of the eyes of four detainees, so that they would be more accommodating, tortured the detained fighters to death,- said Pershikov. “They gouged out their eyes and then mocked them in front of their comrades.”

The political scientist is inclined to explain this cruelty by two factors. First, Kyiv really needed propaganda success, and for the sake of it, prisoners were cut alive in front of their comrades in order to extort from them a confession of belonging to Russia and the Russian troops.

“The Ukrainian side needs a Russian citizen exclusively for propaganda activities, - the expert is convinced. - It is known that more than one sabotage group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has received orders to find at least some Russian citizen in order to pass him off as a career military man. Suffice it to recall the case of Armen Bagiryan - "Buggy", - the command for the abduction of whom was received by the group of House - Vasily Sapronov. Buggy was killed and the Ukrainian saboteur was detained."

“In general, this is a definite success for the Ukrainian propaganda machine,” the expert concludes. “Moreover, today there are only a few Russian citizens among the volunteers: due to the lack of active hostilities, many have simply gone home.”

The second factor of cruelty, according to Pershikov, is a disease of Ukrainian society itself. "The question is: where does such cruelty come from? - the political scientist analyzes. - This is evidence that Ukrainian society is sick. Just look at how prisoners are treated on this side, in the people's republics. Once I had to talk with Ivanchuk, the detained commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and in my presence he dined on pancakes with condensed milk. Washed, shaved, wearing a new shirt. Waiting for his fate to be decided. And most likely, an exchange will be made..."

But on the Ukrainian side, after the exchange, people return to the republics beaten, broken, with signs of torture, women raped. There is a whole torture conveyor working there, as people involved in organizing such exchanges constantly testify. And this is what most of all, according to observers, indicates a truly extremely deep stage of mental illness in Ukrainian society itself.

“And it’s obvious that the guys need to be rescued from these sadists,” Yuri Pershikov emphasized.

Meanwhile, while this article was being written, the Russian Ministry of Defense denied media reports about the alleged capture of a “Russian serviceman” in Donbass.
